Hi All

Im pretty new on the fishing scene and have thoroughly enjoyed every trip so far. I got the Daiwa D shock combo to start off with, however I would like to upgrade my outfit to something better. Im aiming for a reel around $200-300.

Ive been looking at the Quantum Energy PTi-B reel, the Daiwa Sol 2000 and the Shimano Stradic. Does anybody here own them and how are they to fish with? Any other reel recommendations? I dont want anything too cheap as i'll hav to end up replacing it sooner anyway.

Thanks for your help!

Stradic are considered the very best value for money reel by all tackle shops i have been through. Quantums, so little are known about them so far being a brand new distributor for them in Aus now.

But a stradic comes in nice and low in your budget and they are really good. I have an 8000 and currently saving for a 3000 over the heartland and sustain.

Sorry i forgot to add that im wanting a light reel for bream etc

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I was keen on the Quantum as Ive read online all the good reviews about them. tried to look for cons, Not too many about them. However they are hard to source in Australia. The Sol's and the Stradics look like good options so far

Quantums aren't new to Australia. I bought one from Tackle Warehouse in the early 90's just before they stopped distributing them here. Got it cheap at $80odd and it came with a spare spool which was unusual back then. It's a great reel, although showing it's age a bit now after years of abuse including a few dips at the beach. It has the little mechanism so you can cast if you only have one arm too. Not sure they make that model anymore but if they did I'd be back for another one.

i have a stadic 400 the early 1999 model(all aluminum 5 ss bearings). still goin strong. gears are grinding a bit but it is old. i also have a stella 16000 first run stella. still smooth as silk. but i also have daiwa's. exceler and capricorn. they are still going strong after 5 years. ive converted to almost strictly bait casters now. but i did purchase a daiwa coastal spinning 4000 for my father in law and when i took it out of the box it was smooth as heck. also it has 7 crbb bearings and a water proof drag. and i got it for 120 new(us). the drag is 13.2 lbs. here is a link for one in oz from ebay.

Because alot of you know about the Daiwa Sol and the Shimano reel already and not much about the Quantums, this is a little info and the pic. I know its not all about looks but this is one sexy reel imo lol B)

The Energy PTiB Spinning Reel retains its signature titanium vacuum deposition flash on the new ThinLine aluminum body design. This is another Quantum spinning reel which will not disappoint. A great addition for anyone who wants a quality spinning reel that looks great.

All of the spinning reels in Quantum's new Performance Tuned Series (PTiB) are redesigned and 17% lighter across the series. These reels are every bit as good as they look and are perfect for any light line fishing you might want to do. In response to the new wave of smaller diameter and stronger fishing line, Quantum completely redesigned their Performance Tuned Series (PTiB) into smaller, faster and lighter reels. As 'finesse' fishing has taken off in the bass fishing world, Quantum has made the adjustment and designed reels perfect for the task. The three areas Quantum's engineers focused on to reduce the reels' weight were the reel body, the Line Management System and rotor design. Before they even make it to the water, each reel design goes through hours of rigorous testing in the company's ever-expanding laboratory. All of the new lighter components to blame for the huge reduction in weight, come standard in all reels in the PTiB series:

New and improved ThinLine aluminum Body and Side Plate – eliminates flex, even under the most extreme loads, while providing the most comfortable ergonomics.

Improved TiMAG Titanium Bail with Magnetic Trip – guaranteed never to fail

MAGLOCK Continuous Anti-Reverse – industry’s only magnetic roller bearing for fail-proof hooksets with zero backplay.

Stacked Ceramic Front-Adjustable Drag System – provides more precision for line take-up with less twist and damage to your line.

Long Stroke designed aluminum spool – casts farther with greater accuracy

Scratch-Resistant Titanium Vacuum Deposition Finish

Light-Weight Titanium Crank Handle

Extra-hard PT gears

Spare Aluminum Spool

I am fairly Shimano Bias so would be leaning towards the Stradic as well.

I do admit though that Quantum has a certain bling factor :)

To throw another option out there, there are new Daiwa Jupiters at Anaconda. These are similar in stats to a Tierra but about $50 cheaper.

I'm a Daiwa convert :cheer:

Loved the Shimano reels, especially the Aspires and I still use their overheads for deep sea. However I just like the feel and look of the daiwa reels, maybe its a personal thing :D

For bream fishing i love using the revros 2004 and 3000, they're really smooth and strong enough to handle jew fish.
