The $10,000 fish that didn’t get away

Queenslander catches the first Carlton Mid Rich Fish, worth $10k

Queenslander Donald Thorpe became the first Aussie to snag a Carlton Mid Rich Fish, catching a specially marked flathead off Manly Harbour in Moreton Bay, netting himself a $10,000 prize.

“I’ve been telling stories of the ‘one that got away’ for the past 20 years,” said fisherman Thorpe. “I don’t get out fishing much. I had the day off today and decided to head out on the water and cast a few lines. Luckily I managed to hook myself something special.”

Tagged on August 1st, the captured Rich Fish is one of a number of fish released in popular fishing spots throughout Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory as part of the Carlton Mid promotion. Each month until December 2010 a new batch of Carlton Mid Rich Fish will be released in a different location, with a total prize pool of $100,000 up for grabs.

“I registered for the Carlton Mid Rich Fish competition in the hope that I’d get lucky and hook the fish,” continued Thorpe. “I’ve caught a few fish in my day, but nothing that compares to this. No doubt it’ll be the best tasting fish that ever hits my plate.”

The Carlton Mid Rich Fish promotion continues until the end of December. To find out more information on the Rich Fish, including details about where they have been released, what type of fish they are and the best way to catch them, you need to buy a specially marked carton of Carlton Mid, head to www.carltonmidrichfish.com and then enter your unique code to register. Once you’re a registered Rich Fisherman, you will receive updates each month as to when and where fish are dropped and the species type, as well as specialist fishing tips from our fishing expert Bill Sawynok from Info-Fish.

Once you catch a Rich Fish you need to contact Carlton Mid via the phone number on the tag and quote the unique tag number to win your prize. You must be over 18 and registered in the promotion to win.

“Don’t let the Rich Fish become another story of the one that got away,” said Vincent Ruiu, Carlton group marketing manager. “We’ve just dropped fish in Bundaberg, Geraldton and Darwin Harbour, and there’s still Rich Fish swimming around in the Swan River, so there is no better excuse to pick up your rod and reel, round up a few mates and head down to a Rich Fish spot to try your luck. Just grab a specially marked carton of Carlton Mid, register online and give yourself a chance of catching some of the cash.”

Catching a Rich Fish isn’t the only way to win great prizes. From August to November there is also a monthly fishing trip to be won and, in December, Carlton Mid will be giving away a Quintrex boat. Every time you purchase a specially marked case of Carlton Mid you can enter the competition at www.carltonmidrishfish.com.

Carlton Mid has commissioned Bill Sawynok from Info-fish Australia to act as its fishing consultant for the Rich Fish promotion.

“Sustainable fishing practices are vital to ensuring that Australian waterways remain plentiful for future generations,” said Sawynok. “We’ve adopted a tag and release strategy in order to identify our Rich Fish. We also encourage those lucky enough to catch a Rich Fish to take a catch and release approach – winners should remove the tag from the fish and then release their catch.”

The campaign abides by all the current recreational fishing regulations that apply in Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory and all fish tagged will be in accordance with the legal size restrictions that apply. The recreational tag and release education series developed by Info-fish has been adopted as best practice for the entirety of the promotion. Education video clips and DVDs are available for viewing at www.carltonmidrichfish.com.
