Its a rather common sport in the 40s. I remember my late grandfather telling me stories about tuna fishing using a thick bamboo rod, rope, a massive hook and a chuck of meat from the kitchen. He was a sailor/cook on the WWII vessels

That's insane!! Reminds me of my Dad telling me about fishing with spanish mackeral pros using the same technique. He worked on building the road or bridge or something to Bustard Head near Gladstone years ago and as it was quite remote back then they used to volunteer to fish with the pros on their days off. Would be a great experience.
