Boyne Yakking

Recommended Posts

I might just start a yakking post of the river seeing it's my new favourite spot. Today would be the day after Melbourne Cup and I feel fit enough to have a paddle. First I have to do some work crap then do some house chores and if I get a move on I'll be on the water by 3pm.

Anyone who knows Benaraby knows this spot,

But they may not know that about 100 metres down stream is a creek that houses jack, that's when it has water in it

Anyway being so late to launch there was no time to make it to the good spot so I played close by the launch area.

Scored some tarpon and queenies

Then the bugs came out so I headed home

looks like a perfect place for the yak Brian. Is that a r2s Rover that's your favourite?? try the atomic k9's. Same sort of build, just a little thicker, but I reckon walk better.

What size were you thinking Do$ and what colour?

The K9's look like they only have a 2 hook set up, not sure they will stay connected as well as the rovers.

I know this, the hooks on the rovers need to be upgraded, two got broken yesturday, problem with upgrading hooks is that it could change the action of the lure and I am not refined enough to be confident in changing lures away from their origional form.

I'll spend most the trip thinking I stuffed up and the lure will spend most the time in the lure box.

well done Brian, have you tried fishing the bend at the Tannum/Boyne golf course, use to be able to put in at the end of Pioneer drive I think it's called

No not quite, but I have at a go a little further down. The gold course has pretty ugly run off. THey say there is big fish in there but you have to wait for night to see them when they glow.

There are just so many options. I do need to get the boat in the water and bring home some crabs, they will be fighting to get in the traps after all this rain. I've done well each attempt and that tells me there must be heaps of crabs cause I'm not that clever

Yes agree with you there Mark, this place is amazing and I am really looking forward to developing local knowledge as you suggested. I have some pretty good contacts and am drawing from them. It is hard as there are so many options, it's a matter of picking best option for the available time and that's why I have been yakking and not boating. It is easy to drive a few minutes to Boyne and launch the yak compared to playing with the boat.

Anyway the trip yesterday to another new spot gave up some more queenies and some trevs, so can't complain.

It's great having these fish as the common species like the southerns have bream!

Mate - I got a couple of bulldogsK9's but they are a bit small. I'll take em along - the queenies and trev will eat them and maybe a jack but the barra will properly not bother.

Warning - Those Rover need a hook upgrade before using them for any serious fish.

Rocket - love your comment - you have lost nothing.

  • 3 weeks later...

It's been 6 days and 23 hours since my last fishing. Weather is closing in so this arvo is the only chance I can see for a while.

Scored a nice GT

Water was a bit brown above the horrizantial water fall

It was travelling fairly quickly

So quickly that this was my next shot - see the level change in the distance and check out the different colour water

Here's where I caught the GT
