VALE Jim Stynes

A great loss to the whole community,

A great example of the Irish experiment,

A great bloke all round, R.I.P.

Taken from abc.

"Demons legend Jim Stynes has died of cancer aged 45.

Stynes played 264 games for Melbourne and won the 1991 Brownlow Medal.

After his career Stynes concentrated on his youth work organisation The Reach Foundation.

He became President of Melbourne Football Club in 2008, a position he held until just last month.

ABC Grandstand's Drew Morphett says Stynes was tireless, whether it was in his football or his community work.

"You could make an argument that the Melbourne Football Club might not exist if it hadn't been for Jimmy," says Drew Morphett.

A caller rang to suggest an AFL community service award in Stynes' name would be a fitting tribute to the man's work off the field.

It's a suggestion that resonated with Lord Mayor Robert Doyle, who said the outpouring of grief for Stynes was a binding force which needed to be harnessed.

The Premier of Victoria Ted Baillieu has announced that there will be a State Funeral for Jim Stynes."
