2013 Flathead Classic: Angler numbers up, catch down

08 Oct 2013

THE 20th Anniversary Gold Coast Flathead Classic was held over the weekend on Queensland's Gold Coast, where the event attracted a record 503 anglers to compete in the two and a half day event.

Competitors reportedly found the going fairly tough this year due to a variety of factors including windy conditions and discoloured water.

A total catch & release tally of 3817 flathead was recorded for the 2013 Classic, which was well down on totals from previous years.

The largest flathead taken during the comp was a 95cm beauty by Brenden Whyte of the Team Evinrude Whyte Boys.

The second largest fish was a 94cm fish caught on the last day by Con Voukelatos in the final 10 minutes of competition.

Team Fishing World, consisting of David Green, Jim Harnwell and Ian "Big E" Phillips managed "an array of 60cm fish" during the comp which saw the trio finish in the top 20 amongst the teams while David Green took out 19th place in the Seniors rankings.
