I wanted to fish as much as I could before I start work next week so I went down to newstead at 8am today with my mate. Started of with 3 catties of decent size (50,40&30cm) then a nice 50cm ray. This was only within 40 mins and it started raining so we packed up. Rain stopped after 20 minutes so we decided to try one more cast before leaving. We then caught a herring and a moses perch both undersize. Was good fun fighting the catties and the ray. That's my mate daniel with his first ray catch.

Oh if you noticed, the ray doesn't have a sting. Looked as though it wasn't born with one or a shark had bitten it off a long time ago and has healed.

Yea they are good fun Although they aren't the best fish, I reckon they put up a good fight

That tail has been cut off. You'd be surprised what some people to to rays. Once there was a pic of a shovel nosed ray with all it's fins cut off:( and some people just kill the rays that they catch and leave them on the jetty.

I'm pretty sure thats the ray I caught monday, can't be too many rays around that had their tail cut off, I noticed that the other day. Too bad I had to let it go as I forgot to bring a net/gaff. otherwise it would already be on my dinner plate :woohoo:

Went to newstead again this morning and caught over 10 catties Nothing else seemed to take the bait. I'm using 1/0 hooks with squid bait. Bait is floating with a size 2 star sinker. What can I do to prevent the catties from biting?

Paternoster might help. Keeps your bait away from the bottom.

My main line is connected to a snap on swivel with the star sinker and hook both on separate leaders attached to the swivel. A little bit like the paternoster I think

If there's not much current or if your bait is heavy, try shortening the hook line or lengthening the sinker line.

Catties are crap fish but they fight allright they are dissapointing when you think it's something good and its a dirty old catty

Just had the catfish for dinner and I am shocked to say that it tasted awesome! Got a packet of premixed curry and put the fillets in. Awesome! Guess I'll be keeping a few more cat fish in future

Well the cat fish fillets are actually not bad at all. Not smelly. Doesn't flake easily. Of course curry makes it soo much better.

I didn't skin them. The skin's really thin and can be removed easily after being cooked if wanted

I get rid of the slime before cooking of course. ANybody know why they produce soo much slime after they're deaD? Same goes for the rays. Always have to spend a good few minutes getting them slime off

same on a lotta fish cobia/wahoo the slime just seems to get sticky after the fact. bit of warm water and a rag cleans em up pretty fast

Seems like most if not all scale-less fishes secrete tons of slime! Couldn't help doing some useless research on why they've got slime.

All fish have body slime. The species with less well developed scales tend to have more slime. The slime reduces drag to help a fish move faster in the water. It also provides protection against parasites, covers wounds and helps a fish maintain the proper balance of salt in its body.

That's true. The only thing I don't like about catching cat fish is the slime they leave on the line, hooks and weight at times.

Shouldn't be too hard cause they both seriously taste awesome when cooked right. The grilled chilli ray was awesome last night
