Am planning on starting to do a bit of camping with the family now the youngest of our 2 boys is 'ready' for it ..... At the moment I've just got the removable clamp on Thule roof racks that came with my 2nd hand Pajero but I want to get permanent roof racks and probably this roof rack platform

Wanted to check if anyone has one of these (or smaller sized one) or has any opinions on these style versus flat platforms versus actual baskets. I guess essentially the advantages/disadvantages of each type. I'm thinking the one above will suit as it will allow me to easily slide my kayak up onto it and tether it down and when camping I could put a roof bag on top and strap it down. From what I've seen the compatible jerry can holders, etc are expensive but I'm not sure I'd use them anyway.

If you have a roof rack/basket and have any tips or know of another brand I haven't thought of I'd love to hear of it/them.

I would have gone for a tradie rack but height was an issue for me getting into carparks in the city so i went the the Rhino aluminium flat rack and it's been great for loading the yak on and off and everything else.

Personal preference based on budget and use i guess, steel is cheaper, stronger and can rust over time, aluminium lighter more expensive no rust.

I have only had ARB or Rhino makes so can't comment on longevity of other brands.

Passed a couple in an old Pajero like 1980's model and the rood had a roof top tent, 2 swags, 4 jerry cans of diesel, two of those massive blue dust proof boxes full of gear. Plus three jerry cans of water. SOO much stuff!

And they wonder why they tip over.

The centre of gravity is soo high.

Plus the overload.

 Cheers

I've got a 200 series cruiser with a 4wdsupacentre steel roof rack.  I got it about a year ago and I haven't had any issues with rust yet, even with quite a few beach trips.  I went with the flat rack, mainly so I can get in and out of carparks in the CBD and also in a lot of shopping centres.  I haven't had any rust in it yet, but i did touch up all the bolts with some black paint and anywhere I thought might be susceptible to rust when I installed it as a prevantative measure.  I don't feel there has been any situation where haveing sides would have been and advantage for me yet, and I have an awning on the side of the rack as well.

I had Rhino's and they were good at first but rusted and degraded pretty quickly.

They were different style to those though (the ones that look a bit like a fin for 2 kayaks).

All ready for camping trips :) Now just need a shade shelter on one side and a bracket for surf rods on the other side.

Looks mint mate. Don't forget to get grandma and her rocking chair off the roof before you drive into the carport... :frantics:

Will the rod holders fit under?

Looks good.  Can’t go past a King’s awning from the 4x4 supacentre for price and surprisingly quality.  These ones have metal hinges on the poles and the more expensive brands are plastic!  Looks like you still have a good amount of clearance under the carport.  My last ute with the rack on top of the ladder racks had on 2mm clearance.  My new Ute is lifted so I have no chance of it fitting in the garage, so I’m currently welding a custom rack up at work.
