Fibreglass Hull Damage

Recommended Posts

Hi AFO Team,

I was expecting it at some point and was nearly the reason I didn’t get glass (glad I did and so is my back).

But didn’t expect it a couple of weeks after the purchase!

Anyways looking for advice on cost etc and any recommendations for repairs close to North Lakes.

One of the wobble rollers flipped the other way when I was driving the boat on. Farrrrrkkkk!

Its not a bad one. Should be cheap to get fixed or if you are handy you could try it yourself? I have done quite a few dings like this.

@aussie123 is this the right stuff?

The trick is to make sure you don't need to sand too much back so go slowly and neatly. Masking tape and wet n Dry sandpaper is your friend.

I always have a can of gel coat bog. You can get from supercheap in white. Sand the affected area, follow instructions to mix theb apply. Try and layer it up as from expereince makes it easier to sand and mould to the chime shape.

Best to learn yourself as this will not be your last time getting a scratch!

Thanks everyone. @demarc in your opinion as a newby to glass would you do it yourself or take it to a glass specialist? I am okay at DIY but not expert but would like to know how to do this in the future as it will happen again for sure?

I would learn yourself. Anyone can be good. Research and do it slowly! It will occur again. I only repair when I see glass like in your pics. I leave chips for the 6 monthly job.

Don't fret about this stuff, all part of owning a fishing boat and not a crusing boat! 🙂

apart from the fix get your self a few of the rubber toilet rings and put one on the roller it stops them flipping and when you put the boat on they spring so the rollers go where the should

@straddiebrad that's a great idea...do you mean over the roller wheel or just on the inside of the axle to make sure it is heavier than the other side?

Also on further inspection found some more damage so it's in the shop until mid week. Was expecting a bit of work on the boat at some stage but may as well get it all done including a new thicker keel base.

yer over the roller on both sides of the boat so as your looking at it its like a v its stops the waves from turning the rollers up if you know what i mean
