queensland Swains Trip October 2018

I took Max out to the Swains in October on the Eastern Voyager. It is an excellent boat and a fantastic crew that maximised the time spent fishing and the diversity of fishing opportunities. At nine years of age I knew he was ready for the challenge.  

We got the chance to fish from the Mothership in about 100 metres of water for Goldband snapper, rosy jobfish, bar cod, and monster pearl perch. Max's best pearl perch was a beast of 67cm. 

We fished the shallows for the usual collection of coral trout, red throat emperor and tuskfish. 

Fishing was from dories as well as the mothership. 

Weather was pretty good for the duration and the sharks weren't too bad.

Max is a very lucky boy @Daryl McPhee. A Swains trip at 9. I hope he remembers that forever. How did he go in 100 metres?

He went well at a 100 metres. Managed to pull some very solid fish off the bottom!

Max would have been surprised at the difference to the usual b&b species around home, I'd imagine. Sleep well ?

Alas, I never got the pearly on video as I was more focused on making sure he got it up. 

Yes, Max loved the variety and we both slept well each night.

Wow that is so cool. Max is a lucky lad. I know everyone goes crazy for Trout up that way but I love the RTEs. Good on ya dad for stopping fishing to film him.

What depth did you find the bar cod Daryl.

The most difficult thing at the moment is getting Max to focus on whiting fishing. I am a fan of RTE as well. 

The bar cod and some comet grouper were in about 110 metres of water.

I have seen tons of comet cod up that way but Iv'e never seen any bar cod in that depth.

There were certainly more comet grouper than bar cod at the depth we fished.
