RSPCA supports ban on game fishing

THE RSPCA has publicly supported a ban on game fishing following the recent weighing of a 1431 1b marlin at Hervey Bay, Queensland.

Dr Mandy Patterson, a principal scientist from RSPCA Queensland, told ABC local radio the RSPCA strongly opposes game fishing on the grounds of suffering.

"The RSPCA has actually had a long standing policy opposing game fishing because of the suffering that the fish go through in the hour or two they fight for their life before being pulled onboard,” said Patterson.

"This is a subset of our policy which opposes the use of animals for entertainment purposes."

The RSPCA claims its stance is backed by science showing fish feel pain and distress.

"It's well recognised in the scientific community that fish are sentient beings. They have the ability to suffer pain and distress. I don't think anyone would debate that a fish that takes two hours to land and is pulling on the line and doing everything it can to get off that line is not suffering. It feels like it's fighting for its life,” she said.

Patterson questioned the science which show a high rate of survival amongst tagged marlin.

"I debate that number from the literature that I've read. Even if they survive the claim is they go on to thrive. I would question if that is true, and even if they do, it would take a period to recover. What they suffered is merely for the pleasure of somebody that is fishing.

"It's the second biggest [marlin]…and now it's dead, it didn't get a chance to get any bigger...why would anybody feel proud about that?

The RSPCA has distanced itself from opposing other forms of fishing.

"What we're worried about is the welfare of animals. We're not opposed to fishing per se. So if somebody goes fishing from their tinny, catches fish, by law in Queensland they're meant to kill those fish straight away so the amount of suffering those fish feel straight away is minimal. We're not opposed to all fishing, but game fishing, yes, because of the amount of suffering those animals go through,” said Patterson.

What is "Game Fishing"?

So she quotes science that suits here argument and dismisses other science that goes against her argument.

She puts her personal physical emotion and pain experience on an animal that she has never been.

The word for today is;

anthropomorphism

noun

the attribution of human characteristics or behaviour to a god, animal, or object.

I'm not sure how this would be implemented. I don't see how it could be species restricted as there are many pelagic species which I wouldn't classify as game fishing.

I doubt this would be achievable as it would basically also affect recreational fishing, which isn't going to happen.

Add it to the list of Government political correctness gone completely bonkers. Kids can't be called boys and girls at school regardless of age due to gender equality,  no gender named on birth certificates, Fish have feelings and therefore have a right to be not released and killed immediately, but then they complain about how many fish get caught and killed under sized..... there is no win for anything as the government have NFI what they are doing and just agree to get votes! I have just done an education degree and I believe that the government is controlling the education department when everyone blames the education department!
