Hervey Bay Report

I’m spending a lot of time working on my boat ATM, so this report will be brief. Got back from HB on Wednesday after spending 2 nights on the boat with my twins now nearly 18yo. We had another great trip. First afternoon the wind was up so l thought we would do some trolling having a scout around to see what was happening. I put out a Gobbler 8” jerk shad in Hyper Bubblegum Pink.. Not even 1 minute trolling and l had a hook up on a marlin.   Unfortunately it threw the jig head. That’s the 3rd marlin l have hooked on Gobblers lures l’ve got to land one soon.
The next morning there were heaps of birds following schools of Mackerel with a few tuna mixed in. You could have filled an esky with Spotted Mackerel but we released all fish. The mackerel were costing us plenty of the SP’s, jig heads and leaders so we left them to find some tuna. We lost a few tuna to sharks and pulled hooks.
It was uch a good day we beached the boat and had a walk along Fraser and took some pics.
Late in the afternoon we found some big long tail tuna and Luke hooked up but unfortunately pulled the hook. I hooked a couple of Mac Tuna and a shark took a few at the boat.
James landed a couple of Mac tuna as well.
We had tuna pasta for dinner and some card games before having an early night.
The next morning the mackerel had all but disappeared and we had fun catching more tuna through out the day. We got 6 past the sharks this day so about time we turned the tables. The boys had not been to Wathumba inlet so we had a quick look around in this incredible landscape.
We got an early start the next  morning and scored another few tuna before heading home. I haven’t had time to put the vid together but here are some pics of the trip.

Great trip and report there Wayne, well done. Can't wait to take my boat & boys to do a trip like that up the inside of Fraser. Unlucky on the marlin - you'll get one (on a Gobblers I mean 🙂).

Great place to take the kids.

Nice work mate. Such a great mix of fish. I need to do that. It looks like the weather was very kind as well.

When I grow up I have to get there.

Thanks for the report.

You don’t need a big boat fir HB just pick weather windows with a light easterly.

We heard about the Irukandgi being around. We took a small risk while wading to and from the boat. Plenty of others were full on swimming at Wathumba.

Thanks we enjoy sharing our trips and photos.

One has his license and the other will be going for his end if this month.

I saw there was another Irukandji sting in the last couple of days. Might need to take care when winding in that you don’t pick one up.

We got blue bottle tentacles (and at one stage the whole body) stuck on our lines offshore the other day. The bu99ers were everywhere.

When rigged properly they swim so realistically.

I may post a video showing their action.

Please do.

I've been messing with rigs for trolling small plastics. I understand you are still using the jig head as well. Hmmmm.

I have big plastics the are slightly bigger than halco giant trembles but they cost a fortune and a mackerel destroys it in one hit.

I've been toying with the mustard 7766d hooks (for strength) and a series of different size sinkers crimped on the leader just above the hook for smaller plastics.

Crimping an 8 ball sinker is easy too, 4lb demo hammer.

Haven't got to far into it but hearing you hook up to marlin has given me another interest in trolling plastics.

Now did I hear right......you're throwing spotted mackeral back in favor of mack tuna?

I have tried different combinations with sinkers etc for the large SP 8” and above. Thought about Texas rigging them to allow the weight to slide up the leader but haven’t tried it yet.

The rigging has to be simple and fast and is why I’m still thinking a jig heads.

I rig the Gobblers SP upside down for a couple of reasons.

Easier to get them straight on the jig head.

Only have a small fixing point at front allows the the rest of the SP to move freely. When it runs through the water at high speed the tail beats just like a real fish with the head staying still.

Yes we went looking for tuna to save on gear being lost. We released all fish.

I only take the best eating fish for our tastes. The best Mackerel in my eyes is the Spanish for eating and l also really enjoy a fresh Golden trev.

Do you run down riggers?

No l don’t have down riggers. They would use more for trolling live baits rather than game lures.

Fair enough, i just wonder how the soft plastics would go if they were trolled deeper for Spanish. I'm sure you would get the spotties smashing them and destroying the plastics...

Yes they definitely do work on Spanish.
