Hull Designs And Seasickness

Hi all,

Can I ask for trailerable lengths of aluminium boats - particularly in the 4.5 to maybe 6m lengths - does hull design make much difference in terms of seasickness ??

Another way of saying it is, 'Will the ultra new designs incorporating a negative chine make things better or worse as far as seasickness is concerned' ?

People get seasick on carnival cruise ships so hull design is more ride V stability at rest historically for trailer boats.

Keep your head up and don’t bend over to study the floor of the boat for too long

Try tablets, ginger, grazing anzac cookies and drinking water regularly while out. The more time on the water the more desensitised you will become to seasickness.

If it’s the wife that gets crook , then just tell her the bigger the better and get a lot more $$$$ for budget

Yes I haven’t helped much , but you could now get the boat you really want

The greater the deadrise the better the ride but the more rolly it is at rest. Give me the rougher ride any day ;)

SeaAdex armour 55. New design. Totally unorthodox tbh but that's what I like. Looks are second rate afaiac. Strength and reliability are my priority. 

It is just under 6m total length, 23' constant deadrise with big reverse chines. Fully welded bulkheads and stringers giving a solid hull. Strongest alloy boats and the best riding alloy boats on the market by a long shot. People Bork at that comment and I challenge them to go for a ride in one. Everyone...and I mean everyone that goes for a ride in one is gobsmacked. Not a bad word said to this day.

You can easily stand 3 men on the gunwale at rest and underway if you wish. Still rides as smooth as silk too. 

The original no.1 boat was given to a few people to try and break.....it still goes strong and looks great today. My old man still owns it.

Gull Wing derivation Pongrass & a USA mfr went down this road in early 1970

Looks good with the extended chines , makes it compress air and water under the hull. It will ride softer like a Kevlarcat over chop.

Yes. That's the theory. 

The one in the vid is the old man's boat. That thing is mental with the 200 Verado. They have lost people overboard on boat tests due to the inexpected handling capabilities. That boat is pretty much a jet ski with a hard top. 

It's a shame it wasn't 20kn that day. That's when these things shine.  

 

 

 

Kevlakat is imo one of the best riding hulls on the market. They don't roll as much as other kats either. Until the birth of the armour I was dead set on a kat but I am not the gentlest person, so ally suits me.

They did take it. It was the camera boat. 

It's now at home in Nth NSW somewhere I believe.

I find that if you suffer from seasickness then is is mainly because of the ocean swell. When l use to get seasick it did not matter what boat l was on. I was luck that in the Bay l was fine.

@Junky they are definitely a solid boat ... looked at them seriously but just didn't have the coin and wasn't sure I was going to fish that much offshore. I like that they are built here on the bay for the bay and offshore ... and yep pity that day was smooth as ... makes me wonder why fishing monthly even bothers to do the review on a boat that is pitched at 20kt across the bay

I did think it might be because of the swell.  I do appreciate that one can feel queezy on the Tangalooma Ferry.  To some extent it won't matter what the shape of the hull nor the size of the hull if the wife and kids don't get out much.  If there is no clear winner then the seasickness will only ever be solved by getting sea legs I guess.

You guys are the guys to ask though, not any salesperson !!

The easiest way to deal with it is to take a seasick tablet the night before going out. Another in the morning 1 hr before heading out.

Another during the day if need be.  

I do this with my kids and have no problems with them getting sick now. Travelcalm has been the best for them. I have used Kwells in the past as well. 

The biggest noticeable side effect is they make you thirsty. 

For the sake of taking a small tablet and having a good day it’s worth it. Seasickness is a shocking feeling and can put people off ever going out on a boat again if they get it bad.

Good looking boat. Do they use heaps of fuel due to the deadrise?

Not really. 

Mine has a 150 merc 4 stroke throwing an 18inch enertia and I get nearly 2km per liter sitting on 3700ish rpm at 45-50 kph depending on tidal currents etc. 150ltr tank so that will cover an overnighter.

I think that's okay cause I had a 135 merc black max 2t on a 5.4m graywill commando open runabout (another great handling old school hull) and it used more than this rig. It was nearly 1.4km per liter and it had a 17deg down to 12deg from memory. 

 

Leave Clevo and head out SP bar. Head out to the 35s and 50s even up near tempest or out to wave rider sometimes and depending on swell (cause believe it or not you travel twice as far in big swells) and I'll chew 60 to 80ltrs for the day with around 140 odd K's of travel. 

 

Take the kids to peel for the day and it's an 10ltr round trip. 

And yes, I can drive in about .5 mtr of water with no problem. Motor trimmed up obviously. That surprised me too.

I must admit that those Sea Adex boats are the ones to beat at the minute in my opinion for a number of things but not economy nor speed.  Australian Longboats will beat them on economy and speed (but lose to them on a bunch of other things).   I want a mix of the two ... A skinny Sea Adex.

My intention is to call into the Sea Adex workshop very soon just to have a squiz.
