They will be fine to eat from pretty much anywhere (except a landlocked muddy dam when they can get that strong freshwater flavour).
Give them a go? What have you got to lose?
The rest of the world target them for eating, I think we are just spoilt with fish that are easier to deal with. I suspect that the slime puts people off... Just like a lot of people don't like to target greasy cod (aka estuary cod) .
When I was a young lad my grandfather took me to the creek in Mullumbimby and I always insisted in taking a few eel tail catfish home (tandan). They were always delicious.

NSW now has introduced 36 to 70cm on Flathead just like QLD has had for a while now.
I have not been privy to the science but if it makes it a healthier fishery and we all get to eat flatties I am all for it. Many years ago, before the slot limits and before I knew about flathead changing sex, I caught and ate a 97cm version. Full of roe.... Skin was tough as nails and the meat was hard and not very tasty. I have eaten large whiting (45cm) and it was similarly not very delicious. I don't do this now.
Anyone got info/opinion on the breeding of big female flatties and if slot limits are doing their job?

Fair call. They were rubbish... even with a player up they had no go forward and the Knights cut through them like a Wahoo through a bait ball.
@Old Scaley I hope you are leading the comp at this stage? Titans wouldn't have helped...
Can't wait for Gallen to call QLD the worst team ever again.

Interesting Tigers v Knights game this arvo. I couldn’t watch it to the end - Tigers were a bit scrappy but the Knights look shot, especially once Saifiti was sent off. I am assuming the Tigers finished them off ……. ? 🤔🙄🤣

Broncos looked good last week, and the Cows had an ordinary second half but always bring their A game against the Broncos. Tough one.

So very true. I can't settle on Broncos/Cowboys tonight. A lot of good match ups across the park. Should be a cracker.

You will win the main prize for sure this year mate. The hardest thing to do for you this year is to work out what team to back when the QLDrs play each other.

Nah, I’m still in, @Drop Bear. And with 4 Qld teams to back, I think I am in with an excellent chance for the spoon. Can’t wait until kick-off on Thursday..

Thought I’d better have a mackerel fish on the last day before the next closure.Started trolling at 745am and it didn’t take long to find some.In fact the Spanish were absolutely on fire this morning , but unfortunately had to feed the sharks well to put a few specimens in the ice box . Came away with a nice feed and a sore back. Had to sacrifice probably 10 fish to get 3  but managed to break in my new  fishing shirt!

Yes Bob , I think it’s time the powers to be have a look at relaxing the size and bag limits on the bull sharks. I’m not partial to eating them but many people do like them. This might take some pressure off other species. The ones giving me the issues are pretty much all full grown specimens -  all over 8foot long . They’re magnificent creatures  with appetites to match , they  take 25kg mackerel in the blink of an eye.

If shark predation is that big a problem, it's probably worth catching some sharks.
The smaller ones under 1.5m are great eating and put up a good fight, better then many more targeted sports fish.

Well said @Andrew P. @Drop Bear and I were lucky enough to attend the World Recreational Fishing Conference in Melbourne last week. The emphasis was on the role science plays in maintaining a sustainable fishery, and how citizen science contributes to that effort. It was very reassuring to hear speakers from around the world talking about how much science goes into managing fish stocks. Australia is right up there in terms of fisheries management and we are so lucky to have a great fishery and a comparatively low population. We still have the opportunity to make sure that rec fishing is a viable pastime into the future. Despite what you might read from keyboard warriors claiming that fishing regulations are made up by desk-bound greenies, all these very smart researchers are very keen fishermen themselves who have a vested interest in maintaining fish stocks for future generations.
Congrats on the catch @Neil Stratford and good on you for contributing to the science of fisheries management.
