  1. Hi I have read around a bit on this and another forum looking for a rod and reel combo for fishing on holidays. It will mostly be used in East Gippsland around Paynesville area for land based fishing of Flathead and Bream. Kids would like to do a little fishing on our summer holidays, I thought why not get something so I can join in as well. I haven't had a chance to fish since I was a kid. May also have the use of a kayak for fishing as well. My ideal rod would be 7ft /2.13m 2-5kg travel rod paired with 2500 reel as a decent allrounder. I would prefer a travel rod as driving to holiday destinations with a wife and two kids in a 2 door hatchback doesn't leave a lot of room, also means I can pack the rod and reel when visiting the grandparents in Tassie when we fly. My choices have also been limited by looking for something that is tough and can take some abuse. In all likely hood a pure graphite rod is going to get too many bumps and fail pretty quickly when trying to fish with two youngish children. Ugly Stik Rods seem to have a reputation of surviving some rougher treatment. I am a realistic parent as I'm sure the fishing rod will be used as a light sabre as soon as my back is turned . As with all things in life it will be a compromise solution, otherwise I would just buy a Shimano Raider Travel Rod or a Pfluger Transcendent travel rod. With the Ugly Stik been a bit tougher I may be able to get away with a two piece rod and manage to squeeze this into the roof pod on top of the car. When the kids get older and a bit more responsible then I can look to upgrade the gear if we all still enjoy fishing together. I'm looking at the following: SHAKESPEARE UGLY STIK GOLD Travel Rod 6'6''/195cm, 3-6kg line weight, 4 piece Action : Light/Medium - price around AUD $100 SHAKESPEARE UGLY STIK GOLD Spin Rod 7'0' / 210cm , 2-4kg line weight, 2 piece Action : Light - price around AUD $80 Could either of these rods be used with soft plastics or will these be just bait only rods? Would these be usable for my intended use of land based fishing with maybe some kayak fishing as well. ? If anyone has used either of these and has some feedback on them in use it would be fantastic. Thank You all for helping a novice out in advance. Regards The Spook.

    Pre-made Rigs

Hi all. A friend of mine runs this website and makes all these rigs. It is an Australian Made and owned company and they work really well. Just thought I would share his site and try to help support an Australian company. https://bettertackle.com/ He just runs a small hobby business so he only has limited stocks but my mate and I use them and they are pretty good for the price.

    Sticking Braid

While fishing today, I was trying to cast a hard body, when it went out all of a sudden it would drop, the cause being my braid seem to be sticking every few metres, it's actually been doing it awhile, I'll get it respooled asap, it's been on awhile. Just wondering what causes this to happen? It was a good quality braid and been good, so I'm not complaining, just intrigued. Cheers

  11. I apologize in advance if I offend anyone with my potential purchase! I'm totally new to fishing in general and I'm keen to try some beach surf fishing around Bribie Island. I have been looking at rod/reel combos and this one looked like good value. Apparently 5 bearings is good for this price point? I dead set know SFA about what I'm doing here. https://www.kmart.com.au/product/jarvis-walker-ultimate---12ft.,-surf-combo/1102814 If I enjoy the fishing I will likely go all in and gear up with better gear but is this good enough for a casual/beginner to try out?
  12. Hey lads, I have been persevering with Braid on baitcasters as it is thinner etc however I have a higher rate of tangles. When I use Mono I never get tangles.... PErhaps the line isn’t loading onto reel tight enough IDK...... It’s driving me crazy! What do others use?? I mainly use Hard body lures or bait with them.... If I Use SP I just drop them over side of boat and if casting I use spin reel.....

    Barra Rod?

I am looking for a decent rod for barra, jacks and that sort of thing to pair up with my shimano canean 150hg baitcaster (Keep in mind i have NEVER used a baitcaster before!!). I would like it to be 6' to 5'6foot around the 4-8kg 5-8kg 5-9kg 6-10kg mark. I am currently looking at the diawa laguna x 6-10kg 6foot for $80. The abu garcia max-s 5-8kg 5'8foot for $70, and the diawa aird x 6-10kg 6foot for $100. Any help will be appreciated and $100 is my budget!! Thank you for your time. Ben

    New Reel Advice

Hey! Looking for thoughts on a reel for reefs up to 30mtrs. Mainly for Trout, RTEs and the likes. I do bottom bashing and the odd plastic or slug. So far choice is either a Stradic FK 4000 series or Stradic Ci4+ 4000. BCF currently have the Ci on sale for $369. Cheers!

    My New Setup!

This beautiful shimano sedona fi c2000hgs reel just arrived in the mail and paided only $80 bucks with postage!! Now i need to decided which rod for about $100 bucks i am going to pair with this fella? Still cant make up my mind??? recommend me a good light 2 piece spin rod to me, i am getting people recommending me diawa i went to tackle world and a few other stores and they say dont even bother with diawa and said it was a sh#t fight for warranty? So diawa it really not what im going for.
  21. Hey, In the spirit of "this is why we cant have nice things" I thought I would make a post. I lost my love, the Sharp Shooter over the side last week as well as breaking my 4th... yes 4th Cheater... So I need to learn how to look after my gear better... but in the mean time I have 2 questions. 1 - Can anyone recommend an ultra light rod for throwing sugar pens to whiting on and bream with 6lb braid that is; Cheap, light and takes a bit of a bump? 2- Does anyone have a favorite braid that they use for this light stuff. I will be putting it on a 1000 sienna. 3 - Has any one built in a rod locker in there boat? I did a very rough drawing of what I am planning. Would this work or would it be in the way? Plan is that it would be the same height as the casting deck at the front and double as a seat. The bait tank at the back would be same height as the gunwale as I see most of them overflowing. Thanks DB

    Light Spin Rod Recomendation

I've already decided the reel which will be a shimano c2000hgs shallow spool reel but i am unsure with rods???? I am looking for a rod around 1-3kg 1-4kg 2-4kg and around the 7 foot mark. And for it to cost under $110. Any help as to what i should get would be appreciated. I will be fishing for mainly Flathead, Bream and other smaller estuary species with some 6 lb braid and light drag!
  23. Hey all, Heading home to Cairns for a holiday next week (from Singapore), and was going to stock up tackle here because its cheaper. Anyone have an opinion on Sufix 832 braid for plastics fishing? Also my last two trips back to Aus, had a lot of success with Keitech plastics. The price of them here is fantastic (6 bucks a pack!), so wondering if anyone has opinions on specific colours and patterns? Last time the white 'Shad impacts' and pink 'easy shiners' were working for me. Opinions?

    Decent Rod For $150

Iv'e been fishing for about a year now with crappy gear after having most of it brake on me now i want a decent rod and reel for bream flathead whiting and other smaller fish, im pretty parcial to shimano but i will try out other brands, for the reel i want between 2000-2500 size reel. for the rod i want 1-3kg 1-4kg 2-4kg and the length of the rod to be any where between 6'10 to 7'2 (must be 2 piece) for the setup i want it to cost around or even under $200 as i am still at school and cant afford to be buying very expensive gear. And i am a big cosmetics fan so i would like the setup to look good but mainly looking for performance.
  25. Happy New Year to all I have a Live Fibre Overhead Rod (RLFTX16) 10 - 15 kg rated there are some specials running at the moment and I would like some input what would be a good reel to suit this rod. I will be using it to do some light trolling, some live baiting and some occasional bottom bashing. I had done some researching and have been thinking of a Shimano Tyrnos 16 or the Simano Talica 16 Some suggestions would be nice. One further question - is a two speed needed ? thanks
