DESCRIPTION:\nMore to Boating in 2010!There is More to the Boating Lifes
tyle Than Just Boats…The Darwin Boat Show is owned and managed by th
e BIANT and is the showcase for the marine industry in NT and host to an a
rray of exciting features and exhibits ranging from boats and accessories
to outdoor leisure-gear. Following the success of the 2009 event\, the 201
0 Show is set to even more fully represent the whole of the NT boating lif
estyle.NT ‘locals’ love their boating and their boat show\, s
o the event attracts an attendance of around 10\,000 over two days and to
make the visitor experience extra special\, the 2010 Show will be jam pack
ed with features and activities for all members of the family and highligh
ting the various aspects of a boating lifestyle. So this is not a show to
be missed.Darwin is arguably the fastest growing capital city in Australia
in size and population\, with a burgeoning economy and an enviable outdoo
r lifestyle and tropical climate. This means that there is an ever increas
ing new population that is keen to join this great boating lifestyle\, but
many of whom have little knowledge of boating in the top end\, so the boa
t show offers a great opportunity for these new Territorians to learn more
about the facts and benefits of NT fishing and boating\, and also most im
portantly\, the safety aspects. The Darwin Convention Centre is world class
and located on the sheltered harbor waterfront central to the stunning ne
w Darwin Waterfront precinct\, and it presents a perfect venue for the Boa
t Show offering air-conditioned comfort for visitors\, elegant corporate d
isplay areas\, catering and presentation rooms\, high tech services for ex
hibitors\, extensive outdoor areas all with fantastic water views\, and th
e capacity for on-water demonstrations and displays to add a further vital
dimension to the event. With the event timed on the cusp of the tourist se
ason when Darwin’s weather is at its best\, we anticipate increased
demand which will in turn increase the size\, presence and presentation o
f the Show in 2010\, and so together with the growing list of new exhibito
r registrations broadening the exhibits\, we have every reason to expect a
n increased visitor attendance.Boat shows nationally are experiencing an u
pturn in the recreational boating market following the dampening effects o
f the economic downturn in 2009 and with boating being the most popular le
isure pastime for NT families and friends the 2010 Darwin Boat Show is exp
ected to boom. The 2010 Darwin Boat Show will be more interactive offering
visitors more of a chance to learn from the experts how to choose\, handle
and equip a boat and safe boating practices\, and the best places to go b
oating and camping\, great leisure options to come home to\, and how to ca
	tch\, prepare\, cook and most importantly\, enjoy\, a range of NT seafood.
The 2010 Show will incorporate corporate and industry functions\, includin
g the Official Opening and Official Boat Show Breakfast. These events will
be attended by exhibitors\, marine industry members and Corporate and Gov
ernment guests\, together with representatives from other States’ B
IAs\, major marine companies\, boating and fishing clubs\, and like organi
sations. The Darwin Boat Show will be promoted in the local\, national and
statewide forums via a wide network of media and web-links\, and also loca
lly within community networks. The Association is keen to bring more of a f
ishing focus into the Show. There was a great representation of fishing ch
arter operators in 2009 and for this year we are seeking a broader represe
ntation of fishing tackle and accessories exhibits and a greater presence
from fishing tackle and accessory manufacturers. The success of sales in th
e camper trailer markets in 2009 will see those exhibitors incorporated in
to a specialised tinnie\, tackle and camping area\, and enquiries to date
suggest that a broader range of new exhibitors will bring depth and vibran
cy to that area. The Darwin boat show is advantageously placed at the end o
f the annual boat show circuit meaning that it provides more interstate an
d international exhibitors and corporates with the opportunity to attend a
nd to support the show. So\, we encourage youto take advantage of a few da
ys respite to recover from the hectic demands of the national boat show ci
rcuit.Scope of the Event:To maintain the integrity of the boat show\, exhi
bits are restricted to products and services broadly associated with boati
ng and boating activities and the NT boating lifestyle. There is considera
ble scope within this restriction. Any exhibits of unrelated product or sp
ecial application will be judged on their merit for inclusion by the BIANT
.Products displayed for sale must be new unless a special dispensation is
granted after formal application to the BIANT.If you are unsure if your pr
oduct or service complies\, please contact theboat show manageron 0427 508
075 to discuss.Applying For Exhibition SpaceThe world-class Darwin Convent
ion Centre provides around 5000sqm of air-conditioned indoor space over tw
o levels\, and around 2500sqm for outdoor sites. There is a possibility th
at the show will expand further with adjacent on-water displays in accorda
nce with demand (If you are interested in on-water display\, please contac
t the boat show manager on 0427508075 to discuss). With limited space avail
ability\, we encourage early bookings to avoid disappointment. The Darwin B
oat Show is the showcase for the marine industry in NT and offers exhibito
rs a choice of indoor and outdoor sites. Exhibitor rates are arguably the
lowest of any major boat show in Australia.Choose from: * Indoor open spac

provide products and services related to boating\, fishing\, campingand bo
at sports such as diving and water skiing\, and also to the broad marine i

tourism. Charter and tour operators do very well from exposure at the Boa

DESCRIPTION:\nHard to stomach: Impact of marine debris on sea turtles\nD
r Kathy Townsend\, Moreton Bay Research Station\, The University of Queens
land\n\n\nMoreton Bay is home to a staggering biodiversity of marine anima
ls\, including dolphins\, corals\, dugong and sea turtles. However\, livin
g next to Australia’s fastest growing city has its consequences for
the 20\,000 sea turtles who visit Moreton Bay.\n\n\nIn the last 20 years\
, floating marine debris has become an increasing concern due to the risk
it presents to sea turtles. Records show that rubbish floating in the sea
has caused 20% of turtle standings in Queensland by either entanglement or
ingestion. However\, in some areas of the world the rate is substantially
higher\, with up to 100% of stranded turtles containing plastics within t
heir digestive systems.\n\n\nThis month\, Dr Kathy Townsend from the Moret
on Bay Research Station will discuss the plight of the sea turtles found i
n Moreton Bay and what humans can do to help.\n\n\nTime: 6:30pm to 7:30pm
(Doors open at 6pm)\nVenue: Long Room\, Customs House at Riverside\nRefres
hments: Complimentary wine and cheese will be served following the talk\,
and Dr Townsend will be available to answer any questions\nQuestions? Cont
act Andrew (a.stephenson@uq.edu.au)\n\n\nDr. Kathy Townsend is a marine bi
ologist and the Manager of Research and Education at The University of Que
ensland’s\, Moreton Bay Research Station (MBRS). Based on North Str
adbroke Island\, Kathy has been working and living on tropical research st
ations for over 15 years.\n\n\nKathy is a marine biologist with eclectic p
rofessional interests\, which include marine ecology\, animal behaviour\,
conservation and human impacts on the marine environment. She has publishe
d in both international and regional journals and regularly presents at sc
ientific conferences.\n\n\nKathy is a great believer in bridging the gap b
etween academia and the general community. Kathy has established multiple
community orientated research programmes involving scientist\, industry an
d community contributions: recently winning the prestigious Peter Doherty
Award for Science and Education in 2010.\n\n\nAs co-director of the Marine
Pollution Research and Response Unit at UQ\, Kathy is untangling the impa
ct that discarded rubbish has on Moreton Bay’s sea turtle populatio
	n. Through her work\, it has been found that over 35% of the animals found
within this region are dying due to eating the discarded marine rubbish.
In 2009\, she was awarded the prestigious Earthwatch/Goldring Marine Emerg

DESCRIPTION:\n\n	 \n\n\n\n	The Toogoom Family Fishing Competition wil
l be moved to October in 2013 as a direct result of the legislation passed
in the Queensland Parliament recently to move the Labour Day public holid
ay from May to October. The competition will run from Friday 4th October t
o Sunday 6th October 2013 with the Labour Day public holiday on Monday 7th
October.\n\n\n\n	 \n\n\n\n	The Toogoom Fishing Club Inc.\, organizers
of this major fishing tournament on the Fraser Coast\, decided to move the
event once again after previously moving it from the Australia Day long w
eekend to May in 2012 when Australia Day no longer necessarily formed a lo
ng weekend. The Queen’s Birthday holiday will return to June.\n\n\n\n
\n\n\n\n	Club President\, John Higgins said that having the Monday hol
iday has always been a major drawcard for the Toogoom comp with many peopl
e complimenting the club members not only on the excellent organization\,
but the fact that everyone participating has the extra day to recover or t
