I'm still waiting for my first one... ive been using lures both HB and SP a lot more frequently lately so its only a matter of time. I need to find a few better places for a bit of land based fishing around the gold coast so i can start getting my catches up!

Had a few hits on SPs at the spit the other day but they were probs toads lol

Gold Coast has some of the best land based lure fishing spots

You just have to get up early or stay out late

On a non-trolled lure, my first was either a 20cm Estuary Cod casting off the bank in Weipa in grade 4 (9yo or so) on a Daiwa lure of some sort or a Bass of around 15cm from Borumba Dam casting a small hard body bought from Tenterfield Lures back when it still operated. I miss that shop:(

Can quite remember which was first, but I still have both lures:)

Edit: Just figured out that I got the Cod first:)

1990 - i had the old girl drop me off one horribly rainy day to fish the urangan pier and went thru a pack of the big ol ugly pink double tailed mister twisters catching pike and longtom .. good fun, the pier was empty..

not long after, this experience was quickly erased by my first spotted/school mackerel on a lure, all of 30-35cms long, on my brand new baitcaster, a silstar blahblah II and powertip rod and the old abu garcia toby spoons.. visual hook-up and everything.. i was in awe for weeks!!

Long tom caught in Burnett River, near Bingera Weir,Bundy, early 1960`s.

Caught on a long shanked hook, with 3 split shots placed along the shank, wrapped with alfoil from a milk bottle top.

I was about 9/10years old,and the old man wasn`t going to risk one of his u beaut lures(think of small fish profiles),on the end of a kids line.

Pinkey Just walk along the beach for a few km's casting a slug as far as you can and retrieve at a medium pace bound to get a few tailor. Gutters are obviously better but tailor also like the white water created on plain looking sections of beach. They're normally around 35-45cm and give a great hit which wakes you up and fight all the way in often doing mini marlin jumps as they get close to the shore :)

Also it goes without saying early morning and late arvo are the best.

my first fish on a lure was a flathead(maybe 30cm) on a hardbody..walking the banks of the canals up the coast..i just thought i was cool fishing near great kennys house back then:P

after that i started fishing with them alot..think the first lure i went ou and bought was a halco slice and scoed a bonito on that in the bay..was hooked for life after that:)

ahh yes, it was another flathead, 3 flathead in 4 casts while drifting the sandbank directly across from good ol 99. it was late in the arvo 15 years ago, i doubt you could do that these days around there, and again, some no name brand of lure did the damage. probably the last time i had any real success with lures too. lol, apart from offshore. it's weird as i can remember it very distinctively for some reason..

a small bass on a bender HB timber lure out at mt crosby weir , when you were allowed , i was 10 y/o and it was my first bass , my first lure caught fish and my first recaptured tagged fish , if you look at the picture the poor little thing had a massive spear tag hanging out of him. Oh and it was on my first cast of a lure, so thats why i ended up so addicted to fishing with lures..
