i just got home from the rivermouth

when i pulled into my driveway i put the car into reverse to back the trailer around the front of the house and the drivers side wheel fell off

bearing collapsed

thank f*#k it wasn't 5 minutes earlier at 100k

Would have in bits for a while, putting her in to reverse would have let the bits fall out of place.

I was going to be lazy and not bother doing my wheel bearings before Monduran, they will be getting done now!

Well Jeff's scare had me get off my bum and decide to check mine before Monduran next weekend.

Just as well, one outer bearing had got water in it, just a small amount of grease emulsified, but enough. Rust on the bearing, and the bearing seat blue and brown from heat.

Quickly whacked a new set in and bobs your uncle!Repacked the other side, which were fine, anyway. All good for nexrt weekend!

Not as good as me lost a wheel going to glen lyon and drove about 5 k on the hub. Just thought the road surface was noisy. Fell off in a detour and main roads workers saw it and radioed ahead to next gang who flagged me down. They were very good used a front end loader to lift the trailer so I could install a spare hub and tyre that I always carry.

Cheers

best way to check em is get down and grab the top of the wheel and pull it back and forth, there should not be any movement (nothing more than

.5 mm), takes 2 minutes to do the whole car.

Additionally if the bearing nut(on the trailer)is too tight the tin dust cover will be hot to touch. One notch anti clockwise is often enough. I always check the temp when i pull up at the ramp.
