normally ill catch about 2 or 3 in a 4 hour session, but

sometimes you can catch up to 6 or 7. I use bread to catch

them, but u can also catch them on corn kernells, worms, cheese,

peas, meat and basically anything. I fish from the bottom, but

sometimes in the late afternoon u can catch them off the top and

that is exremely fun. Also the reason i dont catch sharks there

is because they dont come that far up. :( . well heres a link

which might help u out.

Nice catch, i did not expect to see carp in Oz. guess that's something i can fish for too, ha.

they do eat anything and everything. same thing happened in canada, carp got into some streams that salmon used for spawning and the salmon population dropped off a bit.

however, they are fun to catch and put up a great fight, i'd say pound for pound at least as good of a fight as a largemouth bass (sorry for the n.american terminology.. it's all i know).

last but not least, back in my home country carp is considered a good eating fish (originally i'm from Poland) and i've easten carp a few times. any fish that is 500g to 1.5kg and from not a still water source should be good eating and not 'muddy'.. yeah you can laugh at me for admitting to eating carp but they are quite good, once you pick out all the bones of which there are tons.

decent size carp, what do they do to the rivers to make them a pest? eat the native fishes food?

thier stirring up the bottom destroys the areas that native fish need to spawn

their foraging nature along the banks also contributes to the bank subsidence & erosion ..

Has anyone tried the carp busters weekend up at Beaudesert, I think it over the easter 4 day weekend. Its a fun family trip. Theres about 20 farms that open their gates to the general public. There's an entry fee for the competition but its nominal. They catch you with the bait (over priced tins sweet corn kernels & earth worms)if you dont come prepared

Yeah they are very popular eating on the continent.

You can easily get carp to 20 kg plus, I would imagine if there numbers werent too high they wouldnt be too destructive?

Incidentally what are the native fish that the carp are damaging, dont really know too much about fresh water species in Oz.

Good carp Dan :woohoo: .I was watching the latest fishing dvd and it had a section on carp on fly with Peter Morse and he was saying that in NSW the powers that be dont mind u releasing carp as they reckon that the amount of people fishing for them wont do any damage to the population  So instead of having them rotting on the banks people put em back.

Dean ;)

Just a friendly reminder please do not release them they are the canetoads of our waterways and do enormous damage. You wouldnt release a cane toad so why release carp.

Here is extract from qld dpi website.

Carp are declared noxious in Queensland. It is unlawful to possess them alive or dead or use them as bait. It is illegal to place or release carp in to Queensland waterways. Penalties of up to $150 000 apply.

Cheers
