To all you keen freshwater fishos.

Have you ever thought where the fish that you enjoy catching come from?

The vast majority of them come from your local stocking association which is made up by a band of keen volunteers.

I have been a member of the PRFMA and FCFSA for a few years now. Whilst my membership of the Hervey Bay group is only nominal my paltry $20 yearly membership does go towards more fingerings for Lenthalls.

PRFMA has been struggling financially for a couple of years due to lack of income from its Boating access scheme but has had a small trickle of income from assisting in community activity.

I think that there are around 10 AFO members who also belong to the PRFMA whose membership has slowly increased to over 40 this year. We are always looking for more.

They have also been successful in obtaining grants to stock Kurwongbah for the first time.

Hopefully lake sampsonvale will soon reach 50% and the boating access scheme can recommence.

Being part of a stocking group usually entails in attending monthly meetings, purchase and release of fingerings .

Quite a few of the stocking groups run other activities such as fishing comps to raise funds.

Here is a list of all stocking groups in Qld and a short description of how stocking groups function.

As you can see no matter where you live there is a group close to you .

I implore you all to have a serious thing about joining one of these groups.

Most of them have their own website where you can get a contact phone number from.

Cheers

Ray

What are fish stocking groups?

Fish-stocking groups are local community organisations that were formed to help develop freshwater recreational fisheries in their area. They work in partnership with the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries (DPI&F) as part of the Recreational Fishing Enhancement Program.

What is the Recreational Fishing Enhancement Program?

It is a program that was introduced by the Queensland Government in 1986 to develop and maintain new fisheries in dams and bolster existing river fisheries.

The program has to be ongoing because, in most circumstances, stocked species will not reproduce in impounded waters (dams). This means that dams need to be continually restocked.

Who are the members of fish stocking groups?

The members are anyone in the community who is interested in helping with the program - anglers young and old, students, workers and business people, local government and council employees, and retirees.

What do the stocking groups do?

They raise funds to buy fingerling's for stocking, and help DPI&F with netting, electrofishing, monitoring surveys (using creel surveys and angler catch record cards) and angler education programs.

Some groups also manage their own hatcheries, with operations ranging from broodstock spawning to grow-out of fingerlings ('grow-out' means the ongrowing of fish fry to a size (usually 50 mm) which has a greater chance of surviving).

How are the groups coordinated statewide?

They are represented by the peak body called Freshwater Fishing and Stocking Association of Queensland Inc . (FFSAQ), which works with DPI&F.

How successful is the program?

Outstandingly successful.

The program started with 12 stocking groups. Today, fish-stocking groups stock nearly every suitable impoundment in Queensland, and some also stock river systems and estuaries.

A significant factor in the program's success has been the working partnership between local communities (through their fish stocking groups) and DPI&F.

How can I join?

If you want to join an existing fish stocking group, write to the secretary of your local association. See the table below, which lists each location and the name and address of the local stocking group.

If you are interested in forming a new stocking group, contact the DPI&F Business Information Centre on 13 25 23.
