Have you ever been to a spot that just scream "fish live here"?

That's a fair description of Coochin Creek.

Today was my first time exploring this area by water and both U_NT and I had high expectations.

I've seen plenty of reports over the years singing it's praises, and there is no doubt in my mind that the fish are there...but stuffed if we could find them.

Got there at about 7.00am and trolled / cast / jigged / prayed for 5 hours...we caught one bream! (we = U_NT:blush: )

Oh well, as I say it was our maiden voyage at this spot, so we learnt a few things and will be back again no doubt.

Anyone familiar with this spot got some tips for my future expeditions? Tides/spots/tactics? Thanks for reading.

Good to catch up again Paul, let's do it again before you head OS:)

The guy across the road from me (some gun club fisho) fishes the area regularly for big whiting and grunter. He took me along on one trip and used blood worms to catch good summer whiting. He has a system of fishing up to the new and full moon. His most recent trip, he got 13 whiting over 44cm (I saw the frames). Biggest whiting I had seen. He keeps things close to his chest, but he indicated he battled one that was much bigger, but lost it at the net. He wouldn't commit to over 50cm, but I can't even get my head around 40cm whiting.

I am a lure and live fish bait man, but I intend to hit up there with bloodworm soon. Will keep the lures up my sleeve. I won't give away the guy's locations (as he almost made me put a blind-fold on), but keen to explore myself and find my own. I'll keep you posted.

Stewie.

Its funny because I can remember rubbishing someone who spoke of 40+ cm whiting on here awhile back... I guess seeing is always believing because on a recent trip to the Noosa River I ran into a bloke filleting his catch at 12pm at night down by the river and showed me a 44cm whiting which was apparently one of the mid sized ones for the day.. He got them at the Noosa River mouth apparently on blood worms. Whiting go hard for their size - like bream.. A 45cm whiting would be an exciting fish on light gear..

Having fished Coochin a hundred or more times over the yrs I have found that the more fishy looking locations are generally either well educated haunts or overfished. I have now learnt to look for areas that most people would overlook because the next snag looks bigger and better and more likely to hold that big one. What we see from above as an indication of a snag can be very deceptive for what lays below, take a look at the fishy looking snags when the water is clear from drought and you will see what i mean.

These days I get lots better results fishing soft plastics in less obvious areas keeping a special lookout for midstream disturbances that could spell something odd near the bottom. Most people look along the banks for thier snags.

Give coochin about 8 weeks with minimal rainfall and it starts to perform very well. Still 4 weeks out from that period at the moment.

There is a secret colour type for Coochin that outperforms any other colour......but it is a secret.

Jack.

Fisherjoe: Best spot to launch would be the boat ramp. Yes, take the roys road exit, and head down to the ramp. unfortunately I can't tell you where it is in google earth, nor directions to get there. I usually follow Lee in, and can only drive in there, not direct someone through. You do have to take a big gravel road on the right from Roys a few kilometres in from the highway.

i have spent a lot of time fishing coochin and roys. most trips have produced quality fish. jacks, jew, cod and plenty of lizard just to name a few. over time i have found some good spots for live bait and other spots for trowling lures, live gar seem to do better then mullet or heiring, i cant give away to many secrets so keep trying and better luck next time.
