Bull shark fishing at the moment with live catfish

hey guys me and my mate are bull shark fishing on the river on the hawthorne stretch. we are using a live catfish we caught just before. is catfish a decent bait and will it work/.

Yeah they are ok shark bait, set the hooks towards the back, the sharks learn to take only the tail off them to avoid the spines.

Not a bad idea to break the spines off as well to save accidentally sticking yourself.

Live bream are my fav shark bait, but remember you must only use legals (over 23cm)

yes we would only ever use legals

no more shark fishing tonight the wire trace just got bitten in half

it was a huge trace too really thick

with a 16/0 hook

that seems pretty overkill for the river sharks....

are you sure your trace was bitten through and not some other explanation? i.e nylon wore away at a point leading to corrosion and a weak spot?

i've caught sharks up to 2m on 100lb trace and 7/0's with no problem, 16/0's are too big for most of the sharks you'll get in the river in my opinion.

also for bait try and get yourself some blue mackerel from the seafood store, i had great luck on it and if it doesnt get you a shark it may just as easily get you a pike eel which is also great shark bait

fair enough but we were sure that it was a shark that got through out trace whether it be from its teeth or being wrapped around it sbody as we can see the bitteing marks and scratch marks all up the trace.

I find using the 16/0's and big baits it stops the eels from getting hooked and likens the chance of a bully
