River Prawns

Hi All.

I was out at kooka park the other day and got a heap of prawns/shrimp with long skinny nippers in the bait trap. I was curious if anyone knew the correct name for them and if anyone has tried eating them because we got a whole heap of them and they were pretty big.

they could either be a freshwater species of prawn or a saltwater species called cherubim. there may be a bag limit on them so check it out- i've never tried to eat them but they make good bait- i know another member once caught a nice little mangrove jack in schultz creek with one on a jig head.

yeah they are a good live bait for the threadies if there around...

I'm pretty sure the long nipper prawns are a freshwater varitety of some description. You know it is really fresh at Kooka when you are getting them!

PS - earlier this year I was using them to try for salmon and got my PB bullie instead:P

thats how i catch mine in a little pot/trap

they arent necessarily freshwater, i've gotten a few at bretts wharf and it is salty as anything out there

Wow okay thanks nadders. Was that after heavy rain or normal conditions?

normal conditions, it was very salty and crystal clear for a change

cool thanks mate, I always assumed they were a fresh water critter flushed out when there is lots of rain. Mind you I tend to see them more after rain but maybe these little guys are affected just as much when it rains and things get too fresh:)

Hey RX, being asian i've pretty much tried everything in the river. They don't taste good at all and somehow they don't catch as much fish as the normal banana prawns do.
