north pine river in the yak?

Wasn't sure whether to put this in salt or kayak chat, so grill me if i got it wrong ;)

but anyway, i've never fished the pine before and was just wondering if its worth the drive to put the yak in here? thinking maybe throw lures at the mangrove banks on the way up to the bruce hwy bridges and flog the pilons a bit?

also, what would the staple species be with this technique? bream i guess are a given, but are there plenty of cod and maybe even some red buggers up there? what about trevs?

and lastly, is deep water bend the best place to put the yak in?

thanks and sorry for the flood of questions :)

Nadders,

There is a fair bit of boat traffic in the pine, if wash from boats passing close to you annoys you, avoid it.

Otherwise there is some nice fishy areas to hit up.

You can launch at Dohles rocks, the sand banks east of the esplanade on the north side of the river are to shallow for boats, and are a yakkers dream. There is also a lot of shallow water up and around the islands if you go the other way, or you can go across the river and into bald hills creek.

Launching from deep water bend gives you a bit closer access to the bridges etc.

You can launch from within castle hill, there is an old gravel boat ramp which is no longer accessible to boats (it is in a foreshore park with bollards stopping vehicle access) that if you have a trolley you can launch from easily. This is more or less opposite the junction with the south pine river. Just east of there is a set of old wrecks that fish reasonably well marked by a red bouy. You can also head up the south pine river and fish the old gravel pits which form quite a large wetlands.

You can also launch from Weis park, which is at Petrie, you can go up or down stream from here, up stream usually minimal boats as it is quite shallow.

You can also launch in the south pine itself, either at the wetlands ramp or from Bob Bell park, the South Pine is a pretty little river, and is nominally 6 knots above the gravel pits, (expect for jet ski lice who seem to have a universal exemption from the rules - any rules.)

I avoid Dohles rocks if it is windy, or wind against tide. Its hard going in those conditions. If really windy, I go to Bob Bell park and go upstream, very protected.

The tide in the south Pine seems to run between 30 and 60 minutes behind Brisbane Bar, Avoid Bald Hills creek and South Pine above the Gravel pits on big tides, the flow is hard and fast. (Unless of course you can plan your trip to take advantage of them )

basically what feral has mentioned already...Id give the south pine river a go lauching from bald hills park..Plenty of fishy spots along mangroves and sand banks and fairly quiet, i was there most of the arvo today walking the banks throwing small minnows around for a few bream and flathead. Jet ski lice shouldnt be as MUCH a problem during the week!

good luck with it :woohoo:
