Hey Boys,

Like I said Friday I was heading down to the Gold Coast canals for the weekend as my Missus parents have an awesome unit down there on the canals near Chevron. Was keen to explore in my yak and like I said Friday maybe get a Trevally.. Didn't happen but set off at 6am and managed to come across acouple of lizards instead.. Another 50cm one and a smaller 30cm version.. On a hard body and softy..

My missus parents are off to South Africa for a month over Christmas and have offered us the unit free of charge for the whole month.. Bewm! Im going to give those canals a peppering.. [img size=500]http://www.australianfishing.com.au/media/kunena/attachments/legacy/images/GC_Canal_Croc_AFO.jpg

Didn't get to measure him but I got a 50cm acouple of weeks ago and he looked just as big.. If not bigger as I swear his head was wider. I had already lost him in the yak acouple of times so after 3 photos I was pretty keen to set him on his way.

In 30 days of fishing those canals at dawn and some sunsets every single day without fail for 30 days I certainly hope to tick afew species off my list and maybe even better afew too with any luck.

Hahaha - mate you did indeed... You were there with your mrs ey? Floundering around is the right word for it. Farkenal I drifted down the sandy side bank of the council chambers but didnt realise how much current rips through there.. Got one small flathead on the way down and paddled back like Guy Leech into the wind and the current. Tough going. How'd ya fare that session mate? Any luck?

Hey Yoyo,

Just be careful fishing in the lagoon at the council chambers. Big fines await those caught by the fun police.

Cheers

 HAHA do you seriously think there would be any fish in it? It's pretty big I guess. It's the first time I've ever been there.

I drag my bird fishing all the time.. I was fishing that junction with her the afternoon before but it was super windy and started raining after an hour and a half. I suspect my girlfriend lost a cod in close on a prawn..

Do you live there?

I thought you were allowed to ?? There's no "no fishing" signs that i could see......?

Yeah mate be careful, signs are up at the entrance to the pond, and the council do police it.

You are right there are fish in there. I go snorkeling there a bit, its chocka full of bream and mullet.

Hey Plugga,

Just a light 2-5 kg graphite shimano rod with a 2000 shimano reel... The tackle box is pretty good I suppose. They're all more or less the same. The plastic was a GULP shrimp and I was just using a hopping retrive.. As in a very slow constant wind then a slight hop of the rod every 5 seconds to bring the plastic up off the bottom. Remember if your targeting lizards you MUST be on the bottom.. Hence the 5 seconds of the slow wind. I've had good luck with the canals down there, so when your down this weekend put your walking shoes on and cover alot of ground when you fish and do a bunch of different retrieves. Cast all over the place and if you haven't gotten a touch in 15 casts - switch plastics..

Good luck champ!

Hey Plugga,

Yeah Im with Tom.. I've never heard of 4inch shrimp? Maybe they are the 3 inch though which are good aswell.. That size is fine if you are targetting lizards as the 4inch gulp minnows are GUN! Flatty can box above their weight and take down some big baits, even the smaller guys but you'll be lucky to get a bream on a plastic that big.

As Tommy said, the hop retrieve is cast out, wait 5 seconds for it to sink to the bottom and then very slowly start to consistently wind and think at this stage of your plastic just dragging along the sand slowly.. Then every 5 seconds or so do a quick little lift of your rod, say from 180 degrees to 45 degrees... (just a subtle jerk) and think of the plastic hopping up off the bottom about 1m and then continue to slowly wind again and think of the plastic slowly settling back down to the bottom then creeping along the sand again.. Just think of what your plastic is doing at the time.. Watch how it performs in close when you can see it..

If you wana go out for a flick sometime, I'll take ya.. I cant guarantee we will get anything, infact I can probably guarantee we wont as that's why they call it fishing and not catching, but I can show you what I know and hopefully give you afew more strings to your bow. Bad luck on the weather this weekend for the Goldy.

Cya mate.

1 sneaky way you could fish there is as you do, go snorkeling, and take a handspear with you muhahaha, that way you can target the exact fish you want/need rather then wait for a random fish to take the hook, and wave a sealed catchbag rather then a net bag so the blood and stuff dosent scare the other fish away and if questioned just stick ur head up and say "na not fishing just snorkeling" lol
