Should we kill the pike eel?

For many posts I have seen saying how the pike eel is a vicious and nasty vermin fish of the rivers and estuarys.

I often see them at boat ramps or where ever killed and discarded as a noxious fish would be.

But in my own experience I have not found them to be vicious at all.

My brother landed a large one the other night and while the pike eel squirmed and flailed enough to look scary , it was a short time and the old boy (or girl) quietened down and gave up.

At this time I realised the following realisations:

Are they really vermin?

Should we be killing them for no reason other than the fact they are not pretty?

Its a fish fcol, should we persist in claiming they are vicious or just harden up?

Do they not have a place within our rivers and estuarys like any other animal?

No we shouldnt be killing them, not for the sake of killing them anyway

Yes they are extremely Vicious, they can and will line u up for a bite at u, people have had achilies tendens torn in half by pike eels. I myself have been opened up on more than one occassion,

but like, rays catfish, sharls etc etc. they are all part of a balanced eco system and should be returned to the water unharmed if possible, if the fish is not to be consumed, thats just my opinion but i think its the best thing to do

Nope we should not. Naturally occuring not an introduced or pest fish.

Sure they are annoying, but if that was my Pre requisite for killing things, well dam, there would be a lot of dead people :P

If you have a reason to kill them, like bait or food, no worries. But dont do it just for the sake of it.

Yep, as above. They will go for you and are very dangerous, especially when they get bigger, but they still should be returned unharmed unless you are going to use them.

When we describe things as vermin, it means we don't like to catch them when targeting other fish. It does not mean that we kill them. The only fish that should be killed (by law) are noxious species. For a full list, see the DPI website, but they include Tilapia and Carp

Its awesome to see there are so many well adjusted human being s on this site.

There is nothing that pisses me off more than rocking up to a jetty and seeing it littered with dried out toad fish, scats or stingrays. I can't fing stand caveman what don't realise that these animals are a part of the ecosystem and have their own valuable part to play.

No we should not intentionally kill then.

But, yes they are mean and nasty pest, and will turn on you when trying to give them a screwdriver injection.

So as they are a clear sign of functioning eco system let them steal the occasional bait, the big ones also are hell fun on light gear.

Cheers...

i jump and cry like a baby when i get bindi's in my feet, how do you think i would react towards you if you were trying to harm me! and what has anybody achieved by killing 1 and leaving it somewhere to rot. i believe it's our natural instinct to prove that we are superior to anything else alive, it's a competition type thing, humans are the superior beings, take that, we've all done it when we were kids, kill that lizard goanna, what ever. it's only as you get older, you become aware of the enviroment that surrounds you, everything has it's place. everything.

while at colmslie tonight, noticed one of those birds that sit on a rock with their wings spread out drying them, mental blank on the name of em. anyway, walked straight passed it and it didn't flinch, even gave it a pat, still no flinch, i think it would disturb me if i saw if floating past in the next few days, because some big bad ass decided it should not live, and kill it for no other reason than that!

as i typed this a bug crawled past the keyboard and i squashed it!

nah i didn't,

Was it a cormorant that had been affected by the recent oil spill?:P

ive seen that bird, i think its a heron. i've been to colmslie twice and its been there stealing my herring the moment i turn my back haha

i can imagine some bogan trying to kill it for that though, would be very sad

as for the pike eels, i've taken my fair share for bait but nobody should kill anything for the sake of it. i don't think i've ever seen killing catfish, pike eels etc advocated on AFO but there are definately people out there that do this kind of thing. saw a stingray left on the beach at pinkenba a few weeks back, i hate seeing things like that

you thinking of the black 1?,i know him, he's a real thief, and boy can he eat, not him another black and white fella, tame as it appears, throw the cast net beside him and he couldn't care less, pick him up no worries, won't bite, nothin.

I've been catching alot of pike eels latley and 3 weeks ago a 1.5mtr one got his/her revenge after unhooking it i turned my back to it to put down my rod and it latched on to the back of my leg just below my calf muscle. After a run through of some of the finer words in the english language we managed to get it off and back in the water. So yes they will have a crack at you but i reckon they are just doing what they do. , IF your not gonna use it for a feed or bait don't kill it.

yeah I can honestly say I have never had one turn on me, but after reading this I will be careful.

No I didn't think they where a noxious pest, and I guess if the sharkies want to take a few now and then for bait thats a lot better than those that are killed for no reason and wasted.

I have grown quite fond of the cuddly little fellas :P
