Singles On Surface Lures

hey everyone,

On the weekend hit up the barra park using my favourite lure at the moment(some unknown from singapore). caught 4 barra in 2 hours and had my vmc trebbles getting bent and straightened pretty badly, so decided to upgrade them to a heavier set of trebbles. this affected the action majorly and only caught me 2 more barra for the rest of the day. often not a look at all and sometimes not hooking up properly. i am thinking now would it be harder to hook up to the fish using singles? as by using some singles i got here it would make the action return to the normal producing action that has scored a fair few fish for me. with the singles they are extremely sharp and strong i am just not sure on whether it would still go ok. please let me know what you guys think, singles or stick with the heavy trebbles.

keechie i reckon the singles, i'm assuming gamakatsu's, will work fine the lures action is the most important thing so it's better to get those additional strikes than if you have the heavy trebles on.

Is that the same lure u coaxed that cattie to the surface with Nic?

One way to find out is to try it, alot of people put singles back to back on slugs so maybe you could try that?

I've used singles with some success years ago. You may have to go for non kirbed hooks, as kirbed hooks sometimes cause the lure to rotate.

yep its the gammakatsu ones, used em on slugs and like them, just wasn't sure about on poppers.

and yep dean it is the one i got that cattie on, trying to get dad to go back and bet me 20 more haha.

and i will give that a go the singles back to back, just not sure if it'll like foul up but will have to see.

I would look for some Owner STN66's that might be a suitable size. I reckon if your going barra on the surface you'd need every thing working in your favour to get a solid hook set.

Dragging a lure back through a barras gob you'd have a better hook up chance with a treble than a single.

I have been trying to catch a single on a surface lure for a while..... but still no luck!

did the popper have feathers on the rear treb originally

mate i watch fwa the other day and they used two long shank hook back to back instead of trebles on the end of slugs fishing for salmon they seem to hook in both sides of the jaw with less dropped fish than the guys using trebles just an idea.

nah no feathers, i don't like to use the feathers on the back of the trebbles i get too many fish coming up and tapping the feathers instead of taking the lure.

Wow nice work on the surface barra! I'm very envious My only shot so far only a surface barra was at Yellow Water, Kakadu two years ago. It was my first (ever) barra strike just on dawn on the surface! I was too stunned to strike and missed it

Cut the feathers down, the reason I asked is that feathers slow the popper down in the water
