Went down to the BOAT club in tipplers passage on south stradbroke island with the family for the weekend. Got to the island at 9am and set up camp, then we set the crab pots in my secret spot. Lunch was then on the agenda before we had a few drinks to let the sun dip a bit before going fishing. Wallabies frequent the camp grounds at the club and the kids got close to this one. The wind was getting quite strong from the north west and a plan was hatched to beet this wind as it was our in house fishing comp.

My friend Terry and i took 5 kids down in my boat to couran cove marina and tied up to the first pontoon. Done this before when its quite for guests there and they don't mind us fishing there. A few chairs out on to the pontoon and the kids took the cast net around to the next one and got us some live herring. We pumped yabbies on the way there at a bank nearby and had some pilchards for the larger fish. After a few small bites on yabbies my son got a 28cm whiting landed

We all got plenty of under sized bream from the yabbies and Terry had a hit on his live herring that made the reel scream. After a the line peeled off in a few directions i was hoping for a jack that we've caught here berfore but a large ray appeared. The ray was released and my heavier rod was up next for a turn with a half pillie out for bait. It turned out to be a nice dusky flathead going 47cm which i new would start to please the missus, with both keepers on the favourites list for chewing.

It was time to head back to the BOAT club for tea and to have a well deserved shower and a few more drinks. It was an 4am start the next day and Terry and his son followed us down to the southport seaway. Terry decided to fish near the last beacon before the seaway and my son and i anchored near the end of the north wall of the seaway. It was the turn of the tide with the start of the run in about to start when we got our baits out. My son got the ball rolling with a nice little tailor landed going 34cm and i caught a under sized chopper.

As the tide picked up the bites finished and the seaway got busy with boat traffic. I radioed Terry with the news and asked if he got any fish, just a few bites from his boat. To many boats for my liking and probably the fish to so we headed outside to see what conditions were like. Able to cruise at 25knots down to the mermaid reef we anchored up in my spot off the GPS as there were no other boats. Caught a slimie mackerel for live bait and set him under a balloon for something big. Set a few pilchard baits with only pike picking them all off for the time there.

I kept refreshing the baits and had some old pilchards for burley and about 8am tipped the rest over the side before we reeled in for heading home. Cleaned the boat up and went to wind in the rods when i noticed one of the rods getting a bite. I picked it up and set the hooks and the rod buckled as the reeled went zzzzzzzzzzzzzz. It was a thumping run and as he started to slow he started to head shake a lot. My son wanted me to call it and i told him that 2 fish fight like this snapper and jew. After a 10 minute fight on 9kg line up came a jew that looked awesome.

I weighed him in at our club and he is my PB jew going 17kg and 1200mm long, this is also on my wifes list for tucker so i'm in the good books. lol

To top it off we got 3 sand crabs and 1 muddie that didn't get captured on film but here are the 2 keen young anglers at the weigh in.
