Hey all,

just got back from 5 days up at the whitsundays and it was a great experience. The trip was highly anticipated and after weeks of preperating with trips to tackle warehouse everyweekend we were finally ready to depart. We left Brisbane on Saturday at midday and arrived to the beatiful whitsunday islands and the fishing gods had graced us with perfect weather. We were greeted at the Hamilton Island Airport by one of the Hamilton Marine workers and departed in the buggy to the boat. We arrived at the boat and had a bit of a chat with some of the locals and after getting some good info we left for our first destination, Martin Islet. We arrived at Martin Islet which is opposite Whitehaven beach at around 4 o'clock during the run out tide and it was strong! It was a place of amazing coral and big bommies which just shouted out GT! Unfortunately it was not to be with the only action being a lost River 2 Sea Dumbell pop 150. We then Anchored that night at Whitehaven and got ready for bait reef the Next Day. We awoke to some minor technical difficulties but we left at 7 '0clock sharp to Bait reef to do some snorkelling and diving. We arrived there at about 8 o'clock to the lovely reef that Bait reef is and we soon had company. As we were mooring a school of about 20, 30-40kg GT arrived at the back of the boat expecting to be fed (JUST IF IT WASNT A GREEN ZONE!. The old man then decided to have a swim with the maui wrasse that had showed up and was very tame, it swam right up next to him and was touching him. After a great experience we left bait reef for Mackerel Bay. We arrived at Mackerel Bay at around 5 o'clock, we then wasted no time and got straight into some fishing after dinner, after many husssar, moses perch, grunter bream and redfish being pulled up we got a nice spangled emperor of around 35cm (by no means a big fish but sure was good looking). We then landed a nice 3kg Morwong that had previously encountered one of the dreaded men in grey suits and had a large battle scar to show for it. Many other fish were landed that night including a massive shovelnose shark on 10lb line. We had no problems getting to sleep that night and were looking forward to the next day where the fishing would really get exciting. We left early in the morning to hook passage where we moored and went to explore Hook island and after a quick chat to a resident on the island we anchored at the mouth of hook passage and started tossing some poppers. after a few casts a big queenie took the lure right at the boat but it was not to be and it snapped the line and i lost my last Dumbell pop 150. After a massive dissapointment I retied a Halco rooster 135 in red and white pattern and continued casting. It didnt take long and I was on to another queenie. After a great fine We boated the first queenie of the trip and my first ever queenie and popper caught fish and it broke the metre mark and was around 7kg. More casts and my yougner brother hooked up to another queenie on a killalure cone popper and then went to land another 1 metre queenie and this was on a light snapper outfit of 10lb. many more fished were raised tha afternoon but none seemed to strike the lure they just half heartedly swiped at them. We anchored at Sawmill bay that night and no fish were to be seen that night. We awoke to another beautiful day and decided to try hook passage again. It was the same as the other afternoon so many follows but no hookups although I hooked up to about 4 queenies but all of them dropped the hooks. We then decided to leave for whitehaven beach before we left back to Hamilton Island. We arrived at Whitehaven Beach at around 1 o'clock and after dropping off the parents at Whitehaven beach I left in the tendor to explore some fishing grounds. I tried Martin islet to no avail again but while driving back came to a huge a school of queenies busting up on the surface smashing bait schools. I then casted my Halco roosta 135 at the school of queenies and immediately had heaps of queenies fighting over my lure but theyd dropped the hooks. Next cast saw me hook up to another big queenie and this time i landed it, it was another 1 metre specimen and unfortunately no camera was in the tender to take a photo so after releasing the fish I went back to the tender to get the camera and my younger brother but no before 1 last cast. Surely enough that cast saw me hook up to the biggest queenie of the trip and it really put on a show, jumping about 10 times high out of the water, it was the most amazing thing i have experienced in my life. After a long fight and great fun i landed the queenie after a huge struggle to get it in the boat and it measured about 110cm and weighed roughly 8-10kg and then I released it. Determined to get the camera and take a photo of the next fished i raced back to the Big boat and got the Camera and my lil brother. we left and first cast saw a double hook up but my little brother Jeremy's fish dropped the hooks but mine sstayed in fortunately and i then went to land another metre queenie, my 4th for the trip, after taking it back to the boat i got a quick snapshot and released it to fight another day and then Jeremy, not to be upstaged landed another metre queenie and brought it to the boat. It was the last bit of fishing for the trip as we headed back to Hamilton Island and it was absolutely amazing. Cant wait to do it again in 1 and 1/2 weeks time but this time we will be going for 2 weeks!

Thanks for reading, now for the pics.
