jackson's creek - nudgee

8-10pm from the jetty

bait: SP's - 3" gulp minnows in pumpkinseed and nuke chook

went to the anaconda sale at everton park and was thoroughly underwhelmed.....most of it was rubbish. picked up some flourocarbon leader though - had my brother's 4lb braid outfit and a bag of plastics and some jigheads in the car and no leader for it.

leader in hand i ducked off to jackson creek at nudgee to try and bag my first fish on SP's. i got down there around 8pm and it was cooooooooooooooooooooooooooold. as in, freezing......hurt inducing cold. there were four other madmen down there braving it so i decided to have a flick in the shallows.

tied on the leader and a nuke chook and off i went. got one or two touches, but nothing substantial. there were plenty of small to medium whiting in the shallows keeping the toadies company, but didn't want a bar of it. a couple of big squid showed up but likewise couldn't be tempted.

changed over to a pumpkinseed since they seem to do the business for most people. had a flick on the whiting side and still couldn't tempt anything. snagged the plastic and had to bust it off. i then spent the next 20 minutes trying to tie a leader on with fingers i couldn't feel!!! ended up having to do it 4 times because the knots would be wrong or would snap when i tried to tighten - damn you 4lb braid!!!! got it eventually though......

3 of the 4 others fishing there got jack of the cold and packed it in. as they were packing one bloke asked what i was fishing with. when i told him he proceeded to tell me his doubt at catching anything with lures of the jetty (not that his empty bucket gave me any confidence in his abilities).

right on cue - not 5 seconds later and as he was still standing there - hook up!!! my first fish on SP!!! a short fight later and a flattie around 25cm comes on the deck. the last gasp of battery on my phone took this.....

tried to get a shot of the plastic in it's mouth for that thread but the phone wouldn't turn on. ah well......

returned him to get bigger and fatter and kept fishing, quite chuffed at my first flatty. only managed another 20 minutes or so before my hands and feet protested too much. it was the kind of cold that made yr hands and feet numb, but hurt too. i packed it in and went home.

interestingly.....the guy that stayed on fishing there said that wednesday night he had pulled in a 50cm tailor and a 42cm bream around the high tide.......i told him about the site and wished him good luck.

congrats on your first mate! now that you have a confidence in using them i reckon you will start to bag more, biggest thing for first time plastic fisho's is the plastics work there's enouhg proof of that, so when nothings happening you need to think, im a fishing the right sort of area? am i fishing the place properly and working the spot. etc.

top report mate well done!

yeah i think that's it. the boat ramp is just down a couple hundred metres. the EPA's green zone maps have it labelled as 'jackson creek' - google earth didn't call it anything so i just figured that was the name.

thanks too!! that strike was a great feeling.....and perfectly timed hahahaha

ok in my 2000 and 2000 ubd

the main/big creek is called kedron brook floodway .

the small 1 is called jacksons creek .with serpentine creek leading off the little creek(jacksons) to the air port.it's called serpentine creek diversion.

in the morton bay marine park user guide it's called kedron brook floodway page 20

page 21 calls kedron brook floodway .jacksons creek and the small 1 serpentine creek.

on google maps they are not named in map or satellite view.

i would go for what the ubd tells me .

since the epa book calls the same creek 2 different names on pages right beside each other.

only thing i can think of is its jacksons creek it's called /connects to kedron brook floodway futher up stream.

then the little creeks is serpentine creek that connects to serpentine creek diversion.

oh

nice going on the flatty on a sp .good stuff :)

Davo's got it right big river where the boatramps on is schultz canal, downstream around toombul shopping centre it turns into kedron brook floodway, the creek at the mouth is jacksons creek, this then flows into serpentine creek which goes off in a Y one way goes into the airport and another way back down towards the schultz canal boat ramp, about 500metres up from the boatramp their is a little inlet and a couple of stormwater pipes thats serpentine creek. Ive caught a couple of Cod in Jacksons creek but otherwise not too much in their. It looks very fishy though and is perfect for yaks.

Congrats on your first. I picked up my first SP fish, a fingermark, there too several months back. The fishing platform is an old favourite for bait fishing for bream.

Give the beach a try at low tide with SPs, you'll have a good chance snagging more flathead down there too. I've found nuke chook and pumpkin skins are killers for them.

i'll back Shrimpo's version

Back when i used to go to school at Hendra High, the creek that passed Toombul shopping centre was called Kedron Brook, after the floods dredging was done and a car park was made just after (nth side)- thats when it was called Shultz's Canal, then it was decided to dredge all the way down to the mouth to stop flooding of the new airport - as far as the waterway down at the mouth was called I can't remember it's name, the only thing i can remember is you used too cross it to get to cribbie. In my mind and others who used to swim in it with the eels and schooling mullet, Kedron Brook ends at the bridge crossing on Sandgate Rd, that's where Shultz's Canal (a canal is usually something dedged) starts - dredgeing was continued further down to the mouth, and as I and other locals like to call it now - it's Shultz's Canal, as just about all of it is dredged. If someone from Nudgee/Banyo who has lived in the area longer than 30 years has a better idea than me, I'd be happy to hear what they have to say. Other than that I'm going to be reluctant to have someone who "knows" the area from a referdex (that's street directory or ubd for those south of the border) tell me where what is, and where it starts and ends.... you must be dreaming   :lau

well dooley cop this just looking at an old harbour and marine map 1973and shulz canal (this is how its spelt on the map )flows from toombul to myrtletown ( before the air port was extended )and ends in serpentine ck which flows out to cribb island then the bay :P this is before kedron brook floodway was dredged ok ;) now looking at a more recent h&m map1986 schulz canal(this is how its splet on this map spelling change)runs from toombul straight past k.b.floodway which now has been dredged and ends in the airport and k.b.floodway runs off to the left off schulz a couple of hundred meters from the end of schulz  it most likely has been changed again since those maps were printed but in no time has SCHULZ canal flowed past the boat ramp and jetty and nudgee beach so stick that up you :woohoo: you northerner you   this is coming from a southerner(south side of brisbane that is) :cheer: al

The confusion comes about with the 2 names Kedron Brook and Kedron Brook Floodway these are 2 different locations. These waterways are now called Kedron Brook as far as Sandgate rd then becomes Schulz Canal until it widens under the new gateway motorway when it becomes the Kesron Brook Floodway to the mouth. Jacksons Creek leads off it on the airport side and Serpetine Creek leads off it.

back in the late 70ts and up till the late 80ts and before the boat ramp was built we went fishing up jackson ck and right up serpentine ck in to the airport we usted to get some good flathead and not uncommon to get up to 10 each for a mornings fishing but as soon as the ramp went in and the access was easy and more people could get there then the fishing droped off :woohoo: any one keen to try now is the time that the flatties would bee there it would be good for a yakk fish as it gets shallow in places and i mean BIG flatties to my biggest from there was 92cm :cheer: al

Well thats somewhat depressing, first time I've looked in this area since I loaded the green zones in to google earth. By the time they re-align the chanel for the new airport runway, there wont be much of Nudgee Beach flats left you can fish.

had to be someone from southside with a map to make the correction :) goodonya BA.

just do us all a favour, next time you're passing by banyo tav or the POW drop in and let all us locals know what we should be calling it :woohoo:

and back in the day 92cm flaties were a common catch weren't they. along with the plastic rubbish bin full of whiting for the mornings work.
