some day at mud

went to mud on saturday..up early hit the ramp at 4.45am. weather not as good as predicted but nothing to bother us. shot off across to mud..fav spot was empty so tried to anchor..no good. still fiddling around with the anchor need to get some new chain and a reef pik as the we ditched the manson idea as it's too big. the kit supplied with the boat is inadequate so i need to up the chain from the 2m to around 5m may stand a chance then. anyway missed the early bite and headed to the lea side which happened to be the northern end. sat in a spot and were soon surrounded by boats. pulled the pik and shot off. found a bit of decent ground and drifted a while. not much doing just a few pike and a cuttlefish. wind had eased off so we headed back to our original destination. peeps everywhere. found a spot a set the pik..no problem. we had a few sweetlip in the under-size range when we started pulling a few squire. suddenly big hit good run..after a bit of a tussle got sight of a good snap on the end of the line..guessing 70cm then snap..it was off. he looked up and swam into the deep. spewing..after that martin did the same thing although his was due to straightened hook (penetrators too) not 8lb leader. after that we lost rig after rig. the culprit ended up being the oceanic toad fish of which martin caught two around the 70cm mark. a tailor and a few squire was all we managed (all thrown back). after dark we headed back in. i've just run in the suzuki which had a problem cutting out. after the computer test saying all was well we thought all was good. not to be..heading back at around 4500rpm she coughs a bit..on we go a bit later stalls mid flight. starts straight away and we're off into the brissy river. down by the wharf the tugs are trying to push out a massive ship as we get right on em..yep..engine cuts out. pilot boat is heading at us thought we were going to fish i think. anyway start the engine and off back to the ramp. anyone ever buying a rig get it all done by the one dealer and one you can trust. after the latest glitch i rang about the engine..the guys who had just serviced it said it must be a 'fit up' problem take it to the guys who fitted it. i said i thought you did as the other mob were not a suzuki dealer. nah mate..they fitted it and we PD em. ok. so i ring australian marine..hang on mate..yeah we'll take a look at it next week..oh no chance this week mate today being monday..you know i paid like $36k for it all up. nah next week see ya! that's how it's been all the way with this mob. so i rang springwood marine and asked if they could take up the floor and check it all out..i'll pay..anything so i don't have to deal with AM any more. well that's how it all ended up..not cool. i would add that formosa and springwood marine have been excellent with anything i've needed but needless to say i'll never take the boat or anything to do with it to AM again. fingers crossed springwood come up with the answer and we can get the motor flying. other than that it's all good. plan now in place to get back on them snaps and try keeping em this time. :)

get andrew leeson to look at it, he just started at springwood marine and was previously the suzuki rep, tech side of things. he also works from home and he knows his $hit. by far the best outboard mech i've come across.

rob

cheers rob..i have taken it to them. they're good. i think they just didn't want to do someone else's job for nothing ..i don't mind paying for them to lift the floor and check the fuel line set up at least i have some faith in them. my fear is if i do it it'll end up being my fault or i'll stuff the warranty. did you go out wide on the weekend? the weather was good where i was but i was wondering if all the changes had put you off? :)

andrew is tha man! no i didn't, got nagged into doing crap i really didn't have the time to do through the week, so just fished the bay, got sweet f/a. something is going on out there. even some mates that went offshore really struggled. but other mates did ok off fraser. we put in a bit of an effort, had good fresh snapper baits, we got touched up a few times, but by what? whole pike, gone! half a pike, and bricked? and didn't even feel the bite, but heard a bit of drag when the whole pike got taken, but not like he found the hooks? you know what i mean.

we had a similar thing going on..thought we were getting hit by mackerel. then like you got bricked. then the massive toadies turned up. the offshore scene for me changed a little while ago. used to catch heaps. didn't go too deep either..75m occasional trip to deep tempest. in the end we found ourselves going to wide caloundra or the barwon banks to get on a few decent fish..thought it was down to me getting tired. beds too warm of late..and i seem to catch more fish between 3pm and 7pm than i do through the rest of the day. that's in the week tho. weekends are crazy for boat traffic in the bay. but like they say any day fishing is better than a day at work. avagoodone :)

mate thats not very good service on there behalf. I have never heard a positive remark about the mob at australian marine. I'd be chasing down the bloke rob knows.

cheers mate,,the boat is at springwood marine and they're going to lift the floor and go through the whole fuel system for me. they didn't sell me the boat and they took it in straight away without any fuss at all. formosa did a good job when i had a prob with that and even said to contact them even if the boat was out of warranty. it seems everyone is trying apart from AM and i sure wouldn't take the boat back to them. it's been an unpleasant experience from start to finish with them. i'm hopefull springwood marine get it sorted this time..if not i'll ask for that guy rob knows. it's a minor major problem..when you want to go full throttle your stuck..not good infront of a massive cargo ship or in a bar..but AM could'nt give a toss..they have their money and 'service' is one thing that goes out the window with them. i know a few boat dealers in brisbane and one who we all know..just doesn't understand it. he says most people in the industry bend over backwards..Am bend you over.

Mate my old boy has a brand new Suzuki and had the dame problems with it. The problem was the dealer fitted it with a fuel line that squeezed when under power cutting the fuel to motor, hence cutting out. They fitted it with a hard line and haven't had a problem with it since.

thanks heaps ozlad..i'll get onto springwood marine and ask them if this could be the same problem. it doesn't sound like it's anything major..but it niggles the crap out of ya..pretty daunting stalling infront of those big ships! :)

The Mustard (I'm as.suming) penetrators are quite a light gauge hook, to keep true to their namesake. I find them quite a good light, think hook for keep livies alive for small sharks, and they hook up well.

Mustard Big Reds are the penetrators' bigger brother, with a much heavier gauge. You would be doing pretty good to bend these ones!

hi mate..adjusting from offshore to the bay. gone light and tried penatrators. not a problem with them per sey but they did get straightened? we've gone large now and bought owner circle hooks and some 'j' hooks too. used big reds offshore and they went ok. but the heavier gauge offshore doesn't seem to bother fish..like there's a difference fishing 75m as to fishing 10m (there is). we aim to catch large fish..can't help getting small ones but we chase the big uns. and when you compensate for the conditions you lose something somewhere. i grew up fishing canals where you'd use a 1lb bottom (hook length attached to a size 16 hook) to catch ten pound fish..it works..not in the ocean tho! so going 'light' always poses questions of your tackle and ability as an angler. i like to fish for whiting and the pro's will tell you to use a 00 sinker in 1m of water. but we regularly catch 40cm whiting using heavier sinkers up to a 4 ball? on the snaps we're upping the hook size to 6/0 and hoping we connect to something decent..but that will mean missing a lot of bites from smaller fish. until we know a regular haunt of big snaps it's a guessing game..thanks mate :)
