on the subject of tyres!

this is mainly for those that have boats other than tinnies.

if you have nan-kang 165 65 13 or 185 70 13 tyres, and they are getting close to 5 year old. ditch them, yep all of them.

a friend and i were travelling up the coast towing a 6 mtr seafarer victory, when a vibration was felt through the car, managed to pull up, on the side of the highway closing half a lane, lucky it was 1.30 am.

found a tyre delaminated, which means the tread came away from the carcase. quickly put the spare on and drove to the closest road house.

went for a walk around the trailer and noticed 2 more were bubbling and about to let go and the spare was not good either and had never been used. so out of the 5 tyres, 1 had already let go, 2 more were about to fail, and a spare that had never been used were all stuffed. they were all new 4 years 2 months prior. now chris is no dummy, he went to the tyre supplier and demanded 5 new tyres there and then, he had all the trailer wheels with him. the manager replied we can't do that, they are over 4 years old. chris explained that it was not a warranty claim at all, but a manufacturing fault, and wouldn't you know it, he got 5 there and then. we know of a few others that have experienced the same problem with these tyres, so just be aware. these tyres are safe for 3 years in my opinion.

also for the guys with the smaller boats that have small wheels on the trailer check the speed rating on the tyre as there are quite a few out there that are only rated to 80kph. traveling above that will cause delamination as well.

most tyres are only good for 3 or 4 years ,it seam's or i have found .

i don't run old tyres anymore after a few letting go and damaging the car.

have has flares and mud flap and rear quarter destroyed by tyre letting go and at 100 km is unpleasant.

good call on a manufacturing fault.

it's usually ok on most cars cause u wear them out before them .

but like my 4x4 or trailers or boat trailers ,caravans etc they don't to enough miles to wear out before they get old.

also if u have a second set or spare tyres store the out of the weather ,sun ,heat etc .will make the last longer.

had a few let go here that are just holding the hardtops up just sitting there ,not even moving.

used to do the new tyres on the front and oldies on the bum to ware them out ,kind of thing. but 2 let go on the falcon damaged the rear tyre arch and ripped the mud flaps off.stopped doing it after that .

3 ish year's later had forgot about it did the the run the old tyres on the 4x4 bum.and as i said above happened the damage = what new tyre's would of cost.

now i don't stuff about with tyre's to much of a risk and to dangerous.

new all round and there any ? about them replace.

200$ for a tyre is cheaper than repairs to one boat or car or trailer or a accident or ones life.

Another good brand of tyre which hasnt failed me yet is nexen there a truck tyre each tyre has a load rating 1860lbs or 930kg at 70 psi. Running a tandem trailor for the bigger boats they give a combined safe carring capacity of 3.720kg which is more than what most trailors can be regested for.Have always run nankangs on the single axle trailors some of mine must be close to 5yrs old by now thanks for the heads up rob will check em out. :)

I( had a set of olympic radials do that to me quite a few years ago out west . A Bit scary when you realise what just passed you at 180kph was the tread off your tyres. A very scary 30 seconds as I let the car drift down to a much lower speed before I was game to touch the brakes.

Round black one's filled with air work well lol :P

on a trailer stiffer walls etc work well just make sure if not in frequent usse to use a conditioner and move the trailer from time to time to avoid perission of the rubber (and keep inflated ) ;)

as far as vehicles what ever floats your boat it's a bit like your a holden or ford man

serious off road muddy conditions KUMO mud terrains kick ass never had one spiked or go flat thats 2 sets on my olde fj55 80k per set (got really noisey after 50k but still worked well ) and one set on my hj47 same deal

on my patrol now I just replaced the yokohama's that were complete crap with maxxi's 751's

so far so good quiet and great grip in the wet :)

Cheers Gaz

Noname, You say that the tyres are 4yrs 2mths old. That was when he brought them and they were fitted.

If you still have 1 of the cases, or have alook at any tyre on your car or trailer. There is an "oval shape" in the mould of the tyre. Usually close to the bead in it will be a 4 digit number.. 0798 etc or 4408 something like that.

The first 2 numbers is the week of the year that the tyre was made and the last 2 are the year it was made.

EG. 07 is the 7th week and 98 is the year 1998 and so on.

In some cases we have had "New Tyres" come through that are 5-6 years old before they are sold.

Laurie.

as i said earlier on, chris is no dummy. this is how we got the D.O.M. this was about 2 months prior to him having bought the boat, because the trailer that was supplied was illegal as most are today sitting under new boats, and it had to have some parts replaced, brakes, axles, springs. things like slipper springs on a trailer with a gvm of 2300kg. what a crock! an accident waiting to happen there, but thats another story.

This goes for caravan owners also, 5 years is about the limit for tyres that spend there time sitting about. I bought a van that was sold in a new state only travelled 200kl and was 7 years old. Spare still had the tits on it. Being an old tyre salesman from way back I should of known better than to head off on a trip with them. Blew one at Roma, one at Barcaldine and the spare lasted to just out of Darwin.
