Brisbane Land Fishing

Hey All,

Kinda new to fishing in Brisbane. I come from the North Coast of NSW and used to generally fish off land with friends on the weekend. Recently recovered all my rods and reels from my brother and was going to go for a fish with my mate. I've read up on the forums here so far and there's been a mention of a few good spots. I took a look at the College fishing spot on google maps but it's definitely too far a drive as I live on the SOuthside of Brissie.

So far there's been mention of Shorncliffe, Oxley, Wynnum/Manly, and also New Farm. What I wanted to know was more of an exact location maybe nearby street names so we can find these places. I'm thinking of picking up some frozen prawns cos we don't have a cast net and I've only found 1 place in the yellow pages so far which sells live bait over towards Shorncliffe. Anyways, a heads up thanks for any help and this is much appreciated.

Hi Mate,

Welcome to the site! Your right there really aren't many places that sell live bait around these traps.. Live worms would be your only chance and although they are a gun bait for bream and whiting they are expensive and not many places sell them.

I'd say to begin with concentrate your efforts around the river. Brett's Wharf is a good place to start. Just out of the city. If you cant get live bait I'd suggest something fresh from a fish market which work out cheaper than servo prawns anyway. Nadders would be able to steer you in the direction of some quality dead bait but from what I hear all the oily fish fillets like yakkas and blue mackrel etc cut into small strip baits work a treat on most Brisbane River bound fish..

The river is definately home to a wide number of species and I'd be concentrating your efforts there to begin with. Alot closer to home too.

Good luck mate - look forward to your first report!

hey mate. where on the southside are you??

Along Manly, head for the william Gun Jetty and the foreshores around it where the marina is.

Bris river pretty much anywhere will catch you something. West End, Kangaroo Point and New Farm etc are pretty good landbased as well. Google Maps is your friend here :) maps.google.com.au

william gun jetty has now got a whole bunch of new marina dockings out the front of it now. you used to be able to cast out east, but now are pretty limited to the northern side.

the new marinas make it look extremely fishy for bream and the likes, but makes for awkward casting.

as for dead bait, take yourself to any seafood shop/market and buy some fresh yakka/yellowtail/scad, fantail mullet, squid (keep the size reasonable, too big is not practical), pike, tailor, etc anything cheap but fresh

the oily fish like tailor, scad, mackerel are especially good and you could catch just about anything on them in the river, ive caught jew, threadfin, sharks, cod, etc on most of those baits above

get yourself a castnet cause live herring is about the best bait ive found in the river, it really isnt hard to learn to throw em etc.

G'day fellow Southsider! B)

Colmslie (actually Morningside Park for the pedants) is the go for us SSers (depending where you are on the South!!). Go down the drive inbetween the hockey fields (Col Gardner Drive off Lytton Rd), follow it round and there's a big jetty and some pontoons next to the boat ramp. (Don't annoy the boaties though and don't park in the long spaces ;) ) I've had Bream, Whiting, SeaToads, rays, shovellies, catties, pike eels etc and others have had Threadies etc. Pot luck! I've used servo mullet fillet, whole mullets, prawn and squid plus raw chicken breast, pizza crust and cheese twisties to good effect. There's also a suspended pontoon at the end of Metroplex Avenue near by that I've had Tailor and Bream from. Other SS places include Tingalpa Creek on the bridge at Ricketts Rd, round the back of Birkdale Station or in the park at the end of Chadwell St. Wynnum jetty nr the wading pool is ok for Bream and Whiting. Bulimba Creek has a floating pontoon under the bridge in Meadowlands Rd and you can fish it at the end of Doughboy Parade in Hemmant, I've seen people fishing it from in the hedge on the side of Paringa Rd as well. Under the bridge that goes on to the Port of Brisbane is popular.

Good luck with the fishing and I look forward to your reports!
