boat ramp etiquette

personally i use it for dumping the boat in and out, not undoing tie down straps, getting rods sorted and the likes, at 1 particular ramp if it's dead as i will park it on the ramp on the side less used, while i have a throw of the cast net or move it out of the way without being asked to do so. if boats turn up.

also don't be affraid to ask the question if someone looks like they need a hand.

not refering to those that turn up with 4 blokes that have no clue, but someone who is by himself and maybe a bit of wind around, you may be able to walk the boat along a pontoon which helps a lot.

or jump on the winch until the boat settles.

1. dont park on ramp to rig up

2. no lights while backing or retrieving on the ramp unless they are reverse lights lol

3. wait your turn

4. dont pull your boat onto ramp unless its on the side of the ramp outta the way

5. come up with a quick retrieve system to follow so your quick

eg:i put my hook for the strap on the second roller from the end take up a lil slack and lock the winch in place, then pull the nose of the boat up hanging onto strap and hook the boat on, it will stay in place even with a bit of a wind, then you can walk to winch and continue to retrieve the boat. i see alot of people that put there hook on the end of the trailer but they still need to have someone to keep lined up while a second person winches , put the hook back a roller and it gets the keel up on the first roller and stays there til you winch it in. if you could see it in action you would understand how easy it is to retrieve solo.

6. say g'day to fellow fishers

7. offer help where required

just a few things

this thread is sorely needed, but I'm afraid that the people who need to learn it already know EVERYTHING and dont listen to advice anyhow.

With age, I've learned to simply sit back and laugh at the crap that happens at boat ramps... or else I'd end up crying or running after people with a gaff.

That said, my 2 cents on the subject would be that people SLOW DOWN on approach to the ramp in their boat. I've been putting mine on the trailer that many times and idiots just scream in full revs with a bow wave like a tsunami. it's just not cool!

what shits me is (a) coming in to a pontoon and its covered in people fishing and they dont wanna move there lines so u can come in,then they winge about it.(b)dopey buggers that couldnt be stuffed starting there motor at home to see if it does go,then sits down at the pontton with a tool box and a half pulled apart motor© idiots who think they can drive there boats up on to the trailer, but never have done it before and take an hour or so to try and do so(d)and people that park in trailer parks that dont have a bloody trailer on just so there closer to the dog park (e) and the bloody transport mob or who evers in charge of maintinece on the damn lights down a colmslie pontoon its hard to see on a dark night.Ahhh that feels better... :woohoo:

it does not just go for the approach but also the departure, the amount of times people motor around directly infront of the ramp, at least 100mtrs either side of the ramp before getting on the plane or coming off the plane, i like to slow down about a hundred mtrs before the ramp and let the motor cool down a lil before shut down.

if you don't drive off a long launch rope i use thats goes well beyond my trailer length so i don't get wet and makes things a lot quicker. i can walk down beside the ramp and pulll the boat in with out it getting close to the ramp again. i watch some guys with 2m ropes and they're in the water trying to push the back of the boat out while holding the front rope. still educating my deckies to not stop it till its fully strecthed the rope as i have an eye splice in the end of the rope so it doesn't pull out of your hand.

yeah love the guys that do donuts infront of the ramp ay..

we also saw one guy at fishermans with his trailer parked in teh water after just launching, messing about with his winch handle for a good 15 minutes before driving up adn parking...

seriously does your trailer need to be parked in everyones way to do that, lol

hmmm now that is an interesting point. I have thrown many a frame into the water and never considered this point. I reckon all the kooks at the boat ramp with their rude behaviour are in the same boat, they dont realise what they're doing wrong and have never thought of things from another persons point of view.

they're still a bunch of kooks tho!

I don't agree with the boaties that throw there fish frames and un wanted bait into the water right next to the ramp for the pelicans to feed on.What the birds dont get sinks to the bottom and this attracks scavenges like stone fish.
