brissy river

marty and me hit the brissy river saturday to do a bit of flickin' with nadders and his dad jim. the weather was a bit too windy for our small ship bandit..no leccy motor..and at 5.2 catches a bit too much breeze. nadders had a bit of a mare on the tranzams (i'll let him elaborate on that one) and his leccy motor played up. in between fishing visits nadders has told me a fair bit about the river and where he fishes (top bloke). as you can guess the ses didn't go to plan. we cast netted around boggy and the poo chute for one 6 inch mullet. we then set off to nadders spot where he was going to drift with the leccy and we had no choice but to anchor up. mullet hooked up and out we cast a few SPs and tranzams whilst waiting. nothing doing. nadders had nothing doing so we decided to hit the wharfs. nothing doing there either. the wind was probably reaching the 15-20 knot mark by now and with the boat swinging one way and the bait another we pulled the pik and headed out the front to see what the wind was doing in the bay. yep blowin hard. the bay looked a bit lumpy but we decided to shoot over to mud anyway. infront of us was a group of of about five people in a smallish runabout type boat. there were four of em sitting in the back. the boat looked to be on full tilt and i reckon the shoulders of the passengers was level with the top of the water..she was sitting at some pitch. half way across we had over taken these guys and were going well the formosa handles the chop pretty good. looking back the other boat had decided to turn back..thank god..it wouldn't of taken much for a disaster to occur in these conditions. we were getting short chop ontop of about a metre plus swells. anyway we shot over to mud and with only one or two boats there we decided to stay on the western side. caught a good sole..and a few other littlies and a 3 foot shark..but it was too hard to detect bites let alone hit em. as the day grew longer the weather eased off to around 10 knots. even with the improvement in the weather the fish were a no show. caught 8 small snaps and grinner and the sole mentioned earlier. whilst sitting there a mate rocked up. he stayed out all night for one 35cm snap. at least we had the sense to make it home for a warm tea a beer and comfy sleep in our own beds. on that point.i have never had much success fishing during the night..rivers the bay or outside..the dawn dusk bites still being the best. the day wasn't completely wasted but. the short amount of time spent with nadders has shed a lot of light on how..where and when to fish the brissy river. good bloke nadders he knows his stuff. the formosa certainly can handle plenty of rough stuff..funnily enough you have to give her a little bit of speed in the rough for best results. somethings remain the same tho..still haven't learned that when it's rough it's too hard to catch a fish. still what can ya do  a day on the water is better than a day at work or being a couch potato. today looks like being a bait finding day..bit knackered from yesterdays pounding..so it'd off to the tackle stores and fish markets to see what we can find.. :)
