However I have fished all of those andf not seen a sooty there, so I doubt worth a trip to target them.

DEETA says

Sooty grunter (Hephaestus fuliginosus)

On the east coast, sooty grunter may be stocked in dams in the Barron, Mulgrave, Russell, North Johnstone, Tully, Murray, Herbert, Burdekin, Clarke, Bowen, Belyando and Pioneer river basins.

A Quick look around shows active stocking from Mackay north on the coast, and around Mt Isa., which pretty much tally's with the above. I'd say Eungulla dam west of Mackay would be the closest where they are stocked.

Quite far for a little adventure then!

Cheers Feral.

I catch sootys from the bank at my property on the mary river (tiaro)...though have only done this in fast flowing shallow rapids...not in the deep stuff.

They are good little fighters, considering i'm only used to catching catfish there :-)

Whoa - how did this one slip past.... Sooties in the Mary?? Sure they are not Bass? Do you have any pics like that nice Barra in your profile!!

Feral is right.

There has been some River stocking carried out in the past, some semi official stuff back in the days and some the work of the ever active MSG, and there are populations in some streams further south the most notable being the Connors River a Fitzroy tributary. There was an attempt to establish them in Monduran but it appears to have failed.

And now without going into a lot of scientific stuff which may well bore you. As well as beeing a very keen fisho some of you may know I am a fairly experienced Aquaculturist and keeper and breeder of various native fish and the minimum thermal tolerance of Hephaestus fuliginosus is 13to14 degrees celcius 12 degrees celcius is terminal. That is they are dead fishies.

Yeah they grow quite big there as well.

Went there with a couple of AFO guys and both Shortie and I got one. Cant remember what season it was prob the end of last summer?

Shortie's was a good looking black fish. Really healthy and thick. Took a live spangled perch :P

my son went there last week for his mates 10th birthday and they said each 1 of them caught over 20 sooties . my son hooked the big cod they got there on a live spangeled but it dusted him up after the first run

Ah they might have been the Jade Perch? There are very very limited numbers of Sooty Grunter but a large number of Jade Perch/Barcoo Grunter. There has been a lot of confusion about the 2.

I was referring to the one near Beaudesert. Sorry if I have been talking about the wrong one!
