trailer rebuild

so since i didn't work much last week ,and no call so far this week.

which is ok cause i have heaps to do and still taking it easy on my back.

the work i do flogs my arms and upper back, spend most of the time with a 9 inch grinder in my hands.

i decided that it's time to get off my lazy butt .

i am very unmotivated i will sit around and drink piss and waste time on the net ,and gin about all day quite easy.

so to keep a but busy i decided it time to fix the trailer for the tinny.

its a very light trailer .phoenix trailer is the brand.

the main frame which is all gal is good nick, all the attachments are rusted and stuffed .

so when i bought the tinny home the springs 1/2 fell off.

first thing was to did it out as it was behind a ton of crap and tin.

that took a good part of day 1 .

day 2 i sorted the shed and found parts etc.

day 3 i started doing stuff.

so since i did feel like stuffing about with the second parts i have here ,and didn't want to drive far etc.

i went to super cheap to get parts .

5 leaf springs 30$ each x2

u bolts 12$ a set x2

u bolt fitting plate 10$ each x2

mounting bolts for springs 17$ for 4 .

so it end up just under 120$ for new heavy duty springs fitted .:)

not bad i reckon.

i bit the bullet and went and got new bearings .

i'm thinking down the track of selling this trailer once i'm happy with it and have the other 1 fixed up.

don't want to sell any1 a bogey trailer.if u buy something off me and i say it good its got to be good .don't want to end up a dodgy bro like in the car yards .

got some up grades to do to it too + the rebuild .

the gal frame is real good nick no rust at all so it's worth spending the 4 and rebuilt it proper .

more rusty parts

Any parts for any trailers, Active trailers at beenleigh are the cheapest by far, axles made to suit, springs, they are so cheap it is rediculous, they are on logan river road and stock everything you need, I have always gone there for any trailer part and would highly reccomend them for anything, they also sell boat trailer fittings and some marine and fishing gear.

They are between Teys bros and the railway bridge.

so fixed the lights tonight .

just got to fit some side roller things i'm trying out in the morning .

a idea i had and being a tight ass and cheap.

if not work i will buy some new poly side skids like i see on the new trailer .

maybe .

so tomorrow it the trailer test run .

kooka park here we come.

and the tinny got some scholastic on it .where i think the leaks are to see if i'm right .

if no water it take on then i will fix them spots better.

hope so i don't like cold wet toe's

haha

don't hack on the crocs they are great .best fishing shoes i ever got .better than rubber FORD thongs and better than my 50 $ leather ones .from payless ,adventure country .not good for water.

hey booty if u want to do your bearing just give me a yell .

few light beers and a cpl hrs .

check them ,wash and repack too easy.

ok so to my wheels .well they stuffed .

the bearings cups move and spin about in the alloy rims .

there is a few ways to fix this .oversize cups ,shims etc.

and a boggy way .chem weld or similar product and hope the cups stay in place .

the bearings and rims would have been like this when i got the boat and trailer .

as it had been sitting for a few years ,we move it 3 meters then lifted the whole lot on another trailer to transport it .

then the axles sat around here in the yard for another year or 2 .

but looking at the active trailer site about 60$ buys new rim and tyres.

so no point stuffing around with the old ones .

also only 1 tyre is good out of the 3 .other 2 only good for spares.

so a warning for any1 who has the alloy rims that have no studs .the type where the bearing sit in the wheel and it goes straight on the axle.

service them regularity .

if the bearings seize .the cups will spin and flog out the alloy wheel.well alloy is the soft metal in the setup.

this is the style rim .its 4 inc across/wide .9 inc high

outside or rim

rim_outside.jpg

this is prob the best 1 for the least amount of scoring from spun bearing cups.

even know it don't look so bad there is over 1mm movement in every direction.

so its new rims or i have found 2 set of rims and axles .just waiting to hear back about them .i think they are also the next size up which i would be happier having .

  • 7 months later...

so since the alloy wheels where stuffed i took the springs and bits back .

since then spent the $ on beer and stuff .

haven't bothered to get the new ones yet ,one of the 2 places listed here i will use .

price vs distance .

so last weekend i was over it ,sick of lifting the tinny on and off utes and trailers .

its either slow cause u unload everything then load the gear and tinny.

or its bloody heavy with every thing in the tinny.

beginning of the day its ok,but after fishing etc all day its a bloody hard job to get it back on the trailer or ute.

some of the places i go to launch at not the best to start with and it has to be put on backwards so trying to lift and push it on,always end up with a sore back for a few days.

so last cpl of days i have been rummaging through my collection of crap.

used the springs and axle ,wheels etc off my old box trailer .

37 year old still going sort of ,the frame had better days .

used the mud guards off it too .

end result is this .

DSC01114.jpg

it bolted to the frame with decent bolts so should be ok .

the skids for the tinny are a bit rough but will do for now ,there just some hard mounted pine .

so this is my do for the time being temp trailer job ,didn't spend a cent .all stuff i had about home was used .

only has to last a few months .

tax time i will get some proper nicer skids ,springs and i got some good wheels for the original axle and the a bit bigger too.

torana size 12 i think.

the original wheels are to small (wheel barrow wheels i reckon) to tow behind a 4x4 .

i did test run on the first rebuild , i could feel and hear the bearing cups moving and

its so low u can not see the tinny behind u .

the ones in the pic are Holden rims ,14 i think.

so it will get a test run in the morning to the servo ,check the tyre pressure and if all good i'm off fishing and not having to lift anything bar a beer or a fish .:)

well got it finished last night ,hooked it up light don't work .

so fix them ,off to the servo for a test run .

tows nice for flat tyres ,nice and high so i can see it .

the tyres where pretty flat 10 psi in them ,pumped them up to 20.

1 was ok ,the other the valve broke off.

sort of expected something to go wrong on them ,there prop 37 year old too by the look of them .

so came home on a flat ,it fell apart on the way home .

tried the caravan spare ,no fit its a holden rim .

so tried a ford rim ,yay its fits .

so i got a few ford rims and tyres about since i am a ford boy and owned a heap of fords .

it started to piss down so no fishing today ,to wet to late .

weather site got it way wrong ,says fine for redbank today .

so going to tinker on it more today and maybe tomorrow .

fix the lights up better ,since i just patched them up this morning .

find 2 good tyres and a spare that are not 37 years old .lol

and a few other think i will tinker about with and make a bit better .

so found 2 good tyres and rims ,that i didn't have to pull off the hardtops :)

went to the servo pumped them up the bead is leaking on them .

so have broken the bead on both of them now ,did 1 this morning and cleaned the bead bit of water and dish detergent and yay all good .

haven't done this since the stock car day 17 year ago .

hard work will a little tyre leaver ,the kind that comes with a car with the wheel nut spanner on 1 end and leaver on the other .

can't find any of the bigger ones ,but i think i bend them last time i was working on the 4x4.

almost there :)

so did some more today .

coming up well for just time ,no $ spent .

the tyres have tread and are not 37 years old ,lol.

15 inc ford rims ,look pretty flash hey.:)

DSC01115.jpg

the boat back on the trailer .

DSC01116.jpg

i ran a plane across the top of the timber skids so its at a angle now ,tinny sit on it a lot better .

found a better bulb for the tail lights and a cable tie since the old holder is a bit average ,since the red part of i light was broken and in very bad shape and got 1/2 a lens of the old trailer and some hot glue all good .

will tinker with a few upgrades tonight and load her up ready for tomorrow ,hook up and go no lifting :)
