Gold Coast canals at night

tightlines

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Im towing my boat down to launch at the seaway on friday night and am keen to explore all night fishing options on light gear. Keen to look for some bream and mangrove jack if possible.

Was thinking up in the residential estate canals and also perhaps around wave break island and the seaway, its a full moon.

Any tips on locations and baits??

If the weather is any good, the seaway is usually pretty busy Fridays and all weekends. Not an easy place to catch good fish unless you are a regular and know how to fish it. There is a little ramp on the Nerang River on the Western side near the casino which gives you good access to some of the canals and also to Lake Intrepid. I would suggest looking around some of the many bridges in that area for jacks and bream. Small chance of trevally also, but probably too early yet.

Should be able to get live herring around the bridges also, but poppers can be deadly not to mention bloody exciting at night.

full moon big tides, head into the canals and fish some of the narrows where the tidal flow gets constricted by bridges or narrow points and the tide rips through

big trevs jacks jew tailor hunt these areas

the canals that run off the river and under monaco st and around the casino are favourites

Your not wrong about being busy at the seaway on the weekend nights, we came back in a couple of weeks ago at about midnight and had to do 6knots from wavebreak to the designated 6knots at marina marage , there was well over 100 boats anchored in the main channel, buggers me what fish they knew might be running through there on the night.

There would have been prob 30 boats with absolutely no lighting at all, I dont know how they wern't hit by another boat.

There is some good waters north of the seaway that dont get used too much, your more out in the open then in the canals maybe but could catch anything out there.

Nerang river and the seaway the idiots seem to come out on weekend evenings.

Try sovereign or epheram islands or the canals at runaway bay, jetties galore if you have a bowmount, you can have a cracker of a night.

The seaway rockwalls could be a good bet.

The only problem is the full moon.

Good luck and you don't know if you don't try.

Bri.

If your fishing bait mate I would steer clear of the pontoon fishing previously mentioned.. Gets kindof tricky in the dark and is better to lure fish them that way.. I would suggest if it's not too blowy that there are two rocky groins that sit inside the seaway on either end of wave break island. Particularly the Northern one. Sit on the eddie side (side protected from the current) and send live baits in if you have a cast net. Or fresh mullet strips in if you dont. Never caught a Jack myself but can definately vouch for Bream and Big Eyes and small Jew. Being so close to the Seaway though your a good chance of anything!

Some good suggestions though - good Bream in canals behind the Casino. Again though if your fishing in the dark and with bait I'd post up under a bridge like Jeff said or head for some more open water.

Good Luck

Chris

Thanks everyone for your local knowledge.

Im not really excited about a seaway venture, would much rather head up around chevron island, isle of capi and rio vista and hit pontoons and bridge pilons.

Im just curious if anyone has some thoughts on bait/artificials.

Obvioulsy would rather be flicking and leave a 'set and forget' or two out the back.

flikking some squidgie pro wrigglers round the structure from isle of capri bridge to the monaco st bridge has been producing some nice catches of flathead and trevelly for me in the last week casting as close as u can to the jetties and moored boats is the way to go.had a few bust ups along the way by suspected cod or jack .after dark i usually set up for live baiting gar, mullet or herring all work well i fish them unweighted no floats, close to any rockwall that drops off in to 3m + of water usually at the entrance to a canal ..... hope this helps
