wesfish
400 each is bugger all for killing something that old and gracious but at least they will be made an example of that you cant get away with breaking fishing regs!
tugger
good, if you go fishing you should know the rules and if you get a fish you don't know its legal size throw it back . authorities will not wear the excuse that you didn;t know they will just charge you and rightly so. big cod like that have been round for a while and become a huge part of there teritory they are the top of the food chain and should be left alone. taking under size fish as well is just as bad as they don't get a chance to mature and breed

natang
I can't believe that is all they were fined!! It is a protected species and if he is a "experienced" offshore fisherman how did he not know what it was! He has killed an amazing fish for no reason and it will now be destroyed and the food chain where he caught it will be totally disrupted. What a knob! roobs
ignorance is no excuse. it goes to show that people who don't believe that they are doing anything wrong at all are capable of great damage. it's as bad as the little boy who caught the giant black marlin and then fed it to the sharks. if this was a warm-blooded creature like a dolphin or seal there would be hell to pay- it's time we started thinking of our fish species as just as special and unique as our sea mammals and land wildlife- anyone who has seen gropers in aquariums or snorkled with them know them to be intelligent, inquisitive and full of personality.
