What are these prawns?

Hey guys, i've just been using a prawn trap around the st. lucia area and the majority of the prawns i've been getting have skinny arms that are like three times the length of their bodies with little claws on the end of them. Just wondering if anyone knows what kind of prawns these are? and what you can catch with them? and should the big arms be left on?

hey mate. They're little fresh water prawns, can't remember the names (but I'm sure someone will)...

You can catch pretty much everything in the river with these. Bream, Flatties, catties, threadies...

they are cherabin, like a fresh water prawn sort of thing, just as good for bait as normal prawns, arms on or off is up to you.

yeah mate..100% possitive they r shrimps. live shrimps r all we use to use in the rivers growing up.

cherabin are not found down this far, there found up in the gulf and grow huge..what your talkin about old mate are shrimp.as others have said just a freshwater prawn.

that would be a cherub they have adapted to saltwater. i have caught a few in the cast net at night time at noosa but got them mostly in freshwater.

Pin through tail and use as live bait. I always pull the nippers off as they use them to hang onto line whilst without them they jump around and attract fish more.

on dpi it says a bag limit of 10? which is probably a good amount of bait for a fishing sesh but not great for a feed.

spot on.. they love cat food..and also soap. yep believe it or not! we always use to steal the soap when we were kids...would cost mum a fortune, but the shrimps love it!

like everyone else said, there freshwater shrimp, best bait for dams,u can catch them in the saltwater aswell, after alot of rain. some also have the same patton as a tiger prawn. i have used them in salt and freshwater, with good results every time.

Goodday boys. Just joined this great site last night. Would like to add to this thread. As a kid we used to catch these fresh water shrimp in the Mary River using a bike wheel frame with a hession bag sewn around making a net. In it about two thirds down we hung a bar of sunlight soap for bait. Leave it in the water for about an hour and then pull up and count how many are caught. I think the shrimp liked the fat contant of the soap. Have also used cat food and a fatty left over bone. Cook and eat the chop first just in case you don't get any bait for fishing. I've used palmolive gold in the river to great effect. As long as its souap and not a 'beauty bar' that contains no soap

My 2 cents worth..... I don't know if its on the labels of soap, I doubt it.... You guys are rite, It's animal fat called "tallow"

Hey mate,

they do look dead like cherabin but as said I didn;t think they came past the gulf. I catch plenty of them in the albert, nerang and logan rivers in the net and bait traps set for mullet.

I actually got a big one about 20cm and decided to barbeque ir for the bugger of it, and it wasn't too bad.

Not bad bait, but the jew i target seem to prefer traditional prawns.
