After several years of drought in most parts of Queensland, it was great to see most dams and rivers in Queensland get a much needed filling over the 2008/9 summer season. Most of the 68 community based fish stocking groups throughout Queensland made the most of the opportunity to stock an increased number of fingerlings in to their local dams and weirs.

Stocking groups found that the increased rainfall and water supply resulted in a greater supply of fingerlings from commercial hatcheries allowing most groups to stock their dams and weirs at full stocking rates.

Under the Recreational Fishing Enhancement Program (RFEP) there was nearly double the amount of fingerlings stocked this 2008/9 season as compared to the last two stocking seasons (2007/8 and 2006/7). Approximately 652,000 golden perch, 154,000 barramundi, 68,000 Australian bass, 60,000 Murray cod, 36,000 silver perch and 33,000 sooty grunter fingerlings were stocked into Queensland dams, weirs and rivers. Hopefully these fingerlings will boost future adult populations providing good freshwater fishing in the future.

I have been having some great sessions in the pine rivers recently and would like to get involved with that group.

The majority of the bass in the pine river systems have escaped from NPD and kurwongbah which are stocked by the PRFMA.

There are quite a few AFO members who belong to the PRFMA.

They stock both NPD and Kurwongbah. We have only been stocking Kurwongbah for a little under 2 years and already the bass there are almost legal size.

The activities of the group are not only devoted to stocking. We are involved with quite a few community based activities and the monthly meetings usually have an interesting guest speaker.

No matter where you live there is a stocking group in your area.

Yeah I read that, considering PRFMA put 20,000 silver perch in to North Pine, cant have been much stocking of them elsewhere this year.

With the missus working nights I dont get to to many meetings these days, but I still manage to get to most PRFMA stocking activities to lend a hand. The PRFMA are a bit formal compared to most groups these days, but under the crust a great bunch of guys - be well worth your getting along to a meeting or two Des.

I miss most meetings as well....kids Kungfu goes too late for me to get there on time. Which is a shame because I'd really like to catch up a bit more with some good people.
