Finally caught a fish on the boat, first time at night as well. Just off the tip of Bulwer Island. Is this a threadfin?

pretty sure thats a catfish mate, how big was it?

About 60 cm, it barely fit in the esky which was the only thing big enough to hold it. We didn't keep it though.

That's a catty. Heaps around at that size at the moment. Boated about a dozen last week. Had a triple hookup at one stage. :laugh:

Yup, did a bit of a google search, and I think it is either a fork tailed catfish or a lesser salmon catfish ( or maybe they are one and the same fish). nice to have a bit of direction though

careful grabbing them like that too mate.......they have poisonous spikes on the dorsal fins (and i think other fins??) that hurt like you don't want to know.....

Yeah they have a spike on their dorsal and pectoral fins. I got jabbed in the hand by a small stripey catty about a year ago while on my brother in laws boat. My hand swelled right up and started weeping. Hurt like nothing i have felt before and had to fish the rest of the day with a cold beer strapped to my hand. Well actually that's not really any change to what i was doing already, besides the pain bit. In hindsight i have read that a remedy to cure the pain is hot water...

Maybe it is now time to revere the mighty catfish in the same way we revere the threadfin salmon?? Just like plants where one man's greenhouse pride is another's weed, so be it for the humble catfish. Personally wouldn't eat either of them, but threaies are prettier.

The dirty old cat-fish may be a nausance to have on the line but from what ive found is on light tackle they do put up a bit of a fight and get the adrenalin pumping when they take off your line and the spool goes crazy and you have to adjust your drag.

Yes catfish spike hurts but a happy moment hurts worse. Over my time I have the misfortune of being afflicted by both! :dry:

Dont worry about your age im 35 and have got a long way to go,When you was in high school you never heard about computers? ,look how far your advanced now,

Back when i was in high school they had the old one with the casette in the key-boards.That was in the 80's
