queensland Anyone else cast netted small River Perch?

Was cast netting at oxley creek last night and I was hauling in quite a few River Perch, they were 3-5 inches long.

Later on I stopped off at Bulimba to net a few prawns and ended up catching 5 or six more in the net.

Somtimes 2 or 3 at a time.

They must be finglings and the river is full of them.

Kind of interesting that there is so many around, I wonder if it is normal or a good sign of things to come?

No pictures as the camera was in the car and they just looked like mini versions of a river perch.

I am sure somone else will come across them soon enough and verify this little river phenomenon.

im not sure if you're referring to the little things that look like baby threadfin salmon, but yeh i regularly get some in the cast net. i dont think they're related, but i may be wrong.

River Perch (My mistake), they look like a jew but with a snub nose.

These one were finglings.

No not the ones that look like threadies, these ones look like Jew with a blunt nose.

Can't see any pictures but sounds like a spangled perch to me..Caught one in the Condamine on the weekend, let it go in my tank... Not a real good idea they are pretty aggro!!

River seems to go through funny stages of them being everywhere or nowhere.

Yeronga reach has a lot.

Thats them... but the bris river ones seem to have more of a purple sheen to them on top around the shoulders. They also grunt...

Yep, but these little ones were silver.

I take it I have been the only one to spot them so far but I am sure somone will

have seen them.

I was not sure if it was common to have so many fingling in the river, but a good sign of river health anyway.

BTW the fishing was dead last night at most places I tried, not even a ray or catfish, but the water was teaming with bait.

I think the cool change forced the fish to shutdown mid river or move.

elops do u know how big these grow?

Hi, i think I caught one of these a few years ago at the mouth of the river, you mention it grunted thats how Iremembered, looks very similar to a jew but not quite. the one I caught was around 40cm, fought really well, I released it not knowing what it was.

River Perch grow to 30+ cm biggest one I have seen 32 cm.

Used to be very common and fished for a lot, mainly in the city reaches.

Population goes through cycles.

ive line caught 1 around indro, over a year ago and havent come across one since

I've netted them out of the Albert River in Eagleby and i've also taken one of about 30-35cm on a live prawn meant for bream. Netted ones have been 15cm to 25cm
