Moreton Bay Classic Target Species Hints & Tips – Snapper

Recommended Posts

Flathead ,bream and snapper is what i'm planning to try for .

snapper will be more luck if i stumble on to some ,but u never know where they turn up.

Mackerel and tailor are the same ,if i'm lucky enough to see some surface action.

don't like my chances ,since i have never really targeted macks or tailor.

so i will concentrate on the 3 species i know more about and have fished for more.

Good call Davo.

Although if you were fishing any of the shallow reefs for bream etc I would not hesitate to chuck a floating pillie out for a rouge tailor :)

usually dave just enough weight to get the pilly mid water works well, so maybe a split shot small sinker to help! other wise the turns will get your pilly lol

some good weights for jig heads are 1/8 in the shallows and upto 1/4 in the deeper water like 9 mtrs, drift is the go!!

using gangs isnt preferable when targeting the snaps snells are prefered personally.Allthough when gangs are used in the correct application they have added benefits over a snall rig when baiting. the picture below shows a ganged up pillie which has the leading gang hook bent so the tow point is inline with the nose of the bait.also I put a large split shot sinker crimped onto the shank of the leading gang hook.this will make the pillie swim upside down and prevent the bait from spining.some times just the gangs them selves are enough wieght to get the bait down a bit in minimal current.I use the split shot on the hook to counter wieght the bait against the tow point so it presents it self upside down

By mounting the pillie upside down your presenting the bait with the dark side of the pillie facing down.preditory fish in mid water sorcing the water above it for a feed will see the silouete produced from the upside down pillie very quickly and zone in on it.

This is a good trick to have up your slieve when the fish start to slow up a bit in the mornings as they move to slightly deeper waters as the sun gets more over head. so use this method as the rising sun will assist the silouete of the bait.

The hooks used are mustards 3/0 hooks for ganging.

I think whether or not its the most entries will depend on where people go...

I reckon if more people head south this time a lot more flatties could turn up.

After all its a two dayer this time so people with have that extra flexabilty to travel further.
