Long Toms around brissie?

Morning all,

Just a quick question regarding the stout and slender Long Toms. Does anyone know of an area where either species would make a regular appearence? I hooked 2 whilst camping at Mon Repos and fishing the Bundaberg port area, and the things go like a miniture marlin, tailwalking and jumping, throwing hooks. One went about 40cm, the other would of been close to 75cm and had a mouthfull of chompers to match it's size

last time i was at south straddie they were all over the beaches, could not get a cast without having a hit by one.

I saw a few out at the mouth of the Brissie river a few weeks ago. If its that sort of aerobatic kicks you're after, have a go at garfish. The big stonker ones go pretty hard for their size and love getting airborne.

i have heard of a few from varius saltwater creeks that run off brisbane river but they are not something that is a common target species.

I know the gars go hard mate, and they are a great bait to boot. Not bad on the chew either :woohoo:

Used to catch em one after the other in the oomera on home-made dough baits (Top Secret)

I'm more after the long toms because of the lure factor, i rarely use baits these days as it's hard to find quality unless you atch it yourself. More poppers, stickbaits and blades than anything

mate use poppers in the shallows of mud island, they are everywhere at the moment.

^^ yep. Thats true too. Had them absolutely hammering my plastics the other weekend. Thought they were massive pike.

a mate of mine and i went fishing at currumbin canal and he caught 2 nice size buggers, going approx. 50cm each.

Both were caught using berkely 4' smelt softies

caught them on the bay side of stradbroke and in canals near locks at clear island waters- also the oyster leases in the tweed!

Bribie has heaps of the suckers on the flats and there willing to hit surface lures . This ones a sample of what's available on the flats. Got him on a sugapen and it turned out to be an evil longtom cause it bit me and put a treble in my finger at the same time If you have access to a boat go out to scarborough reef as you always see meter plus longtoms hanging around.

Nah mate, I'm shore based at the moment. From what everyone has said though, the flats surrounding most of the islands seem to be the way to go? Does anyone know if they are deent for a feed at all?

I always finish a session in the pumicestone passage by throwing a slug for long toms around the wreck near the canals. Awesome fun when they take the lure on the surface, like a barra!

you can sight cast to as many as ya like at scarbrough..go fish the spit on the last of a run out tide, there are heaps of em!

the spit im talkin about is just near the caravan park.at the base of the northern end of the marina walls. its nice place to wade on a still morning.

Around Jabiru island paradise point heaps around the swimming enclosure side near the bridge caught one on herring and saw a few more around if you have a cast net throw it at paradise point jetty heaps of the buggers good luck anyway
