An extraordinary chain of events

Ridiculous chain of events leading to..

Worked all weekend and was supposed to work today as well - i swapped shifts with someone so i had the day off with nothing to do, posted up last night to see if anyone was keen for a fish today; this is where mick_fillet steps in..

The plan for today was to take apart an old reel and try to give it a tidy up, looks scuffed up etc so i bumped my thread to see if anyone wanted to fish today and went to work taking it apart. 30 minutes later and i see that Mick sent me a message to see if i wanted to fish from ~11 til sunrise, so so so keen but had to pickup the mrs from uni that afternoon so it was only going to be a quick session. Roughly 11-3

Out of the kindness of his heart (And him having to cancel a trip outside chasing some macks) he offers me a spot on his boat for a trip onto the river in search of some elusive (for me anyway) threadfin salmon! *Pause story* Seriously i think this is what AFO is all about and sets it apart from any and all other fishing sites out there.. Complete strangers coming together with one thing in common - loving to fish. A random offering me a spot on their boat for no good reason not knowing if im a donkey who could make it the worst day on the water for them.. *continuing :P*

Anyhoo.. Talks are had and the plan is to meet-up at Pinkenba at 11.30 to head off. I quickly run to the shed grab the biggest rod i have (6-10kg stick with a winch, sorry big a$$ reel on it :P).. grab the biggest hooks i've got and chuck it all into the car along with castnet hoping to get there before Mick and have some livies ready to go. Quick check of where the eff pinkenba ramp actually is and a look on google map leads me to believe there could only be one option - oh well, decision is made to head off and google-map tells me 55 minute trip!

35~ odd kilometers and it's going to take as long as going to the coast which is over double the distance? .. Screw it i had a good feeling so finish loading car and im off. Quick stop by servo to get cashout to chip-in for the trip and im off.. 30 minutes later im at the ramp just in time to see mick reversing the boat down and a quick scoff at how accurate google-map is T___T"

Gear onto the boat and we're off in search of livies. Water was like glass, up on the plane and we're at spot to look for livies in no time at all. 15-20 minutes see's us with enough bait for the day and off to find a spot. First on the spot report is no good from some other fisho's complaining of only catfish being caught.

We're confident, or should i say mick so anchor goes down and a little whiting goes onto his rod. First cast and bang he gets crushed but doesnt hookup, on goes a herring for mick and after a few bumps comes up with most of its scales missing and an excited look on micks face haha.

On goes another herring for hm while i havent been touched and again its scales get taken off by what im informed to be a jewie, Mick rigs up another livie rod while i pull in my bait to check that it's missing.. hmmm

Half an hour later see's the boat next to us raise a monster from the deep with a threadie going 98 splash into their boat, meanwhile nothing for us except missed hits :(

About an hour goes by and all is quiet with myself sending out another poddy, mick with a couple herring.. Bait is looking scarce at point so the call is made to head back in and grab some more. I wind my little poddy up to see that it too has all its scales missing and a big bite-mark across its body - compression mark from a thready so my confidence is growing :)

We motored off in search of some more livies but all we can seem to find is prawns and a monster mullet in excess of 40cm - damn should have got it on the mat. Finally find some herring and mullet so they go into the bucket and back off to the fishing spot. We spy someone with their rod fully loaded so cruise up for a look-see but he drops the fish mid-fight and calls us bad luck?

Anchor down and livies out, maybe 10 minutes go by and i realise in all the commotion today i hadnt even eaten hahaha.. so a quick beer for breakfast and zzzzzzzz i look up to see mick with a smile from ear to ear and the ever so sweet sound of his drag screaming.

The fish just doesn't want to play nice though, it slowly makes it's way toward the anchor rope but not before mick corrected this by steering it to the other side of the boat :) The fight went on quite a while as anytime he seemed to make any ground, zzzzzz the fish would just take it back and lunge back down. About 5 minutes and we see leader so i ready the net and the fish is in! 108/9 cm of beautiful silver threadfin!

Mick quickly re-rigs a rod with a livie and sends him down as im keeping an eye on mine which is getting bumped and moving around eratically, in the time mick puts the rod down and is trying to work out the logistics of having this beast in the boat i'm on and am finally rewarded with some zzzzzzzz for my 3 hours on the water :P

A 5 minute fight which will long be forgotten and we have colour - 109cm of golden coloured threadfin! By this time it's almost 3 so with having caught nothing from 11.30-2.45; 2 fish between 2.45 and 3 i'm happy to go home! Albeit with a couple of threadies joining us for dinner =]

Here's a big thanks for mick for finally putting me onto my first threadfin - hopefully not my last. Absolutely awsome bloke & good company! Cannot wait to get out there again mate thanks again!

Haha i'm glad you liked it mate, and a big hello to Wes of thready fame (in my eyes anyway). Called up mick today to see how he was going and mick goes - "yeah i took five one MPL out with me" ; Wes - "you mean simple" - Mick "ahhh.. "

It's simple guys :)

Thanks again and mick for prime minister :P

It's not so much about the quality of the fish(that seems average size for threadies) it's the culmination of everything falling into place for the day to actually happen and then the fish topped it off. I would have been happy regardless but now I'm on the hunt to beat a 109pb :)

Thanks for the kind words guys, hope it was easy to read - maybe I'll be in the running for rotm?

Great day that what this site is all about I've only been on it for a month and already met some great people who give up their time and knowledge , I.m looking forward to repaying and doing the same with my boat

Dave

Nail on the head, Mick's not the first and hopefully not the last member i'll meet off the site. Getting to know more people and more importantly getting out there for a flick is what it's all about :)

I usually roll my eyes at the sight of a long read like this but once in to it I was hooked. Great read, great fish and exemplary AFO spirit. I can't wait for the pics, go get that camera Simp!
