Daiwa Reel - Need Advise

Hi Guys

A mate of mine came back from Japan and brought me a present - it is a Daiwa Spinning Reel (eggbeater) labelled a Finesurf 30.

It's a great looking real - typical Daiwa quality etc but there is one problem (??)

There is no drag on this reel - apparently it is the way they fish over in Japan.

I imagine it is sort of like an Alvey and I want to find out if anyone has fished with something like this before and whether they have been successful?

I sorta think it has benefits in the surf around more strikes etc but some drawbacks around bust offs.

If this is a go what would you recommend for line and rod? I am thinking something with some give

Thanks

Blair

Yes, you are true that it is surf reel. However, their "surf fishing" style would be different from what you know in Aussie.

Many of the Japanese tackle are very specific to target fish, or a single kind of fishing style. They have specific surf tackle for targetting whiting on beach, and others targetting flounders, or other larger fish.

The one you have is for surf fishing whiting. As they are just small fish so these reels dont have drag, and you just reel in the fish.

You can see another high end product for this kind of fishing still doesnt have drag, though it costs nearly 100,000 yen :P
