Fishing Trip with a Knife attack! 8/5/10

Ok, so yesterday after much deliberation and much driving around that didnt work out(trying to find a spot at Jacobs), Mr Felix and I went for a fish down at Saltwater Creek at Hope Island. :)

Uppon arriving on the low tide to a high, we spotted pleanty of poddy mullet swimming around the edges of the creek so Mr Felix threw the cast net out, gathering a few of the poddy mullet to use for livies.

So on the hook they went and out into the water, with all our hopes on landing something decent.

After a while of sitting, watching it drift, bringing it in and then once again recasting and continuing the process, Mr Felix managed to hook a fish on the other end. After bringing it in, we were happy to see that he had landed a nice 52.5 cm flathead, ending his dry spell since he left NSW several years ago. :cheer:

So off with the fish's head as we had decided we were going to take it home for a nice bit of dinner. After takeing the head of we realised we really needed some fresh water to keep the fish in while we continued to fish.

So while Mr Felix cast another poddy out in hope to try and catch another one, I went to find some fresh water when.........

after taking a few steps and hitting something hard I had fallen to the ground in excruciating pain (I though I had just caught my foot in a stump). Slipping my shoe off and throwing it, and taking my sock half way off, I realised that what had actually happened was that I had actually attacked myself (and stabbed myself in the foot) with our (Mr Felix's) fishing knife (actually a fishing and hunting knife).

We still dont know how as the blade was in the ground and the way it happened is a one in a million chance that it was to happen that way. And normally we are very carefull. :S

Whilst applying preasure to the wound, Mr Felix had gathered everything together and much to his misery, he through the fish back in the creek and off to the hospital we went. After about 4.5 hours in the hospital, and much holding back from wanting to hurt the doctor, we set off for home.

So now, the moral of the story is that no matter how well Mr Felix and I are carefull about all of this, we realised, that with my luck, we can never be tooo careful and the one day we arn't, it is always the day that something bad will happen.

Hooked_on_trout: Deffinately Bad Luck. and I've been having it for like the past week! as for stitches, they didn't give me any for many reasons.

One of the reasons was that due to the position, if they put any in, it may just rip it open again and also due to what caused the injury, stitching it up would also be bad due to it may cause infections.

As for Happy Fishing (without the injuries), Im out of action for probably about a month.

Yeah, this wasn't our best trip to date... :S

Unfortunatley, my haste in preparing the fish for the trip home and my carelessness with my own knife caused an injury that shouldn't of ever happened.

I am only glad that i'm a fanatic with my knife and therefore it was razor sharp and 'clean' for a fishing blade. It left a 'neat' wound and penetrated 2.5 - 3cm on a 15-20 degree angle into the middle of Miss Munchkins' foot. :side:

Please let this be a lesson to all, keep knives and utensils in sheaths when not in use and just be careful. It's not a pleasant site seeing someone like your' partner on the ground, bleeding from a wound created by your knife.

On a more positive note, I have finally left behind my 'flathead curse'. When I lived in NSW I would catch flathead after flathead, but once I moved to QLD I couldn't raise one. As of yesterday, my PB for QLD stands at 52.5cm. It is also my first legal fish from QLD waters.

Taken from saltwater creek on a live poddy mullet fished on the bottom near a drop off on the muddy banks near bridge.

I think the actual blame here is not only Mr Felix's but mine aswell. I am also fanatic about putting things away and I saw the knife in the ground, yet I never put it away either, in the end causing myself an injury that could have been avoided.

Another lesson has been learnt this weekend aswell and that is never rely on somone else to have put Knives and Untensils away. Check for yourself and if you see it in the ground (as this knife was) or just laying around, put it away yourself. Dont rely on the owner to do it as everyone gets caught up in a moment when they land a nice fish.

As I said, the blame was both of ours and not only one persons.

My positive note is that in the 2-3 weeks, maybe 4 that we are out of action, it will give us time to buy some new gear and we will both be ready for our next (and hopfully better) fishing trip!

That's a really good lesson for everyone, only ever use sharp knives. People don't realise just how much more damage a blunt blade can do.

I hope you heal up real quick, Miss M. And well done on breaking your duck, Mr F... no stopping you now.

@ Davo_Dinkum : Thanks, I hope so to, I wanna go back out and catch some fish, but with Mr Felix being the wonderful partner he is, he has told me that we both wont be going out untill its fully healed.

As for with the foot really hurting, it is more than just the pain that is getting to me. Pain killers can stop the pain, but watching Mr Felix have to do almost everything for me, It makes me feel horrible and its almost unbareable to see. I try and get up and help him (as being used to doing most of the things) and he tells me to sit. I just consider myself lucky through as I had a wonderful partner who looked after me fast and effectively and takes care of the gear really well.

I previously have dropped a 100 kg flat pack on my foot and never had anything other than a bruise. I tend to make all injuries well done and not just half assed (as my mum tells me)

@faulked: I KNOW now that the foot hurts, especially when the stupid doctor tried shoving a needle in my heel. Sorry about your toe mate, not exactullay a nice injury there either. At the moment, Im just hoping that I can get used to the crutches for the next few weeks!

@Bluevien : Thanks Bluevien. :)

Thanks Kreel for those awesome words and well you know that you generally get hurt doing the things you love the most, so Im sure there would be pleanty of stories.. but mine are only just beginning! Pictures of the foot may be up this afternoon. I have to get it checked out at the DR's so I might get some pictures then :)

Jeez.. you had me worried with that subject heading..

Hope you get better soon and too bad that you didn't get to eat the flattie. Just buy one of those small tradies eskies and keep it in your car. Small enough that its unobtrusive, but enough that you can chuck some ice in and keep a fish chilled for more than a few hours.

Oh boy, I know they can sweel up, my foot has swollen up 2 times already and this is the third day.

After seeing the GP, I now have to go back to him every day to get it re dressed so they can make sure that its all good. A bit of wasting my time, but oh well, just as long as it heals well I dont mind. I just hope that with doing this they can give me hints on how to make it heal faster.

But man, looking at that, its gnarly, and my mother said that it looked better from the 3 days ago.... thats a good sign!
