I was lazy last time and took my old merc to a local shop at Rocklea, and was charged hundreds, and it broke down first time out. Took it back and was told it was old and stuffed. Took it back to Mal at Creek Marine and good as gold again. Really knows his older mercury. Definitely worth the drive for me

Sweet! Booked in for the 24th.

I'm surprised about how well this engine goes actually seeing that it is a 76' model, it does have it's idiosyncrasies which I'm learning about, although when you take the cover off, there doesn't seem to be many 'original' parts by the look of it so I'm thinking that it's been getting reasonable maintenance attention over the years LOL.

It will be the first service since owning this boat and I've put about 30 hours on it since Feb. The previous owner said it was serviced about October but I'm really doing this for peace of mind and hopefully to get a good benchmark after Mal looks at it.

Thanks again for the referral and I'll report on the outcome.

  • 2 weeks later...

Picked up the boat from Creek Marine yesterday.

Mal serviced it and went though from top to bottom and checked it all out for me.

Thanks for the recommendation, not only does he seem to be a nice guy, it looks like he knows what he's doing too ;-)

good to hear you got it sorted.......howd it go? any issues?

i got an old jigga on the back of mine to.....1978 115HP evinrude....

has neva let me down touch wood.....although i know is has been reconditioned at some stage......

its all about preventative maintenance now.....if something major goes wrong it just aint worth the money to strip ot down and get it fixed!

Nah no issues really.

Like you said, it's a matter of just keeping the service up to these oldies.

On top of the service, Mal replaced a few older parts that were showing signs of deterioration etc.

Not sure if I am going to get a chance to run it now that I've got another boat to set up, but I reckon the next person that owns it will be happy with a freshly serviced merc.
