62cm Trevally... BAIT! 11 May 2010

I got the word from Tugger late last week that we had left a few fish at Boat Rock and that we should go back and collect them. A plan was hatched and, as is the case all to often, a 3am wake-up was required. It was a particular drag to get me out of bed but I made my rendezvous at Tugger's this morning at 4am. Our 3rd this morning was Nathan (Dragon7's bro) and we met up with him at the boat ramp.

What a dream ride out, the Bay was calm and the trip was even a little too brisk, arriving at the bar just before first light. We wallowed around the entry to the bar for a short wait and were then on to Boat Rock as the sun rose.

We anchored and immediately noticed how fast the current was running, we made the snap decision to get closer to the Rock and found our anchor spot quickly - we didn't move from here the entire day. For those of you that have never seen Boat Rock it is a beautiful sight any time of day but as dawn approaches the Rock seems all that more attractive.

We had little time to marvel at the Job fish when our livey went off in the rod holder. We all handled the problem of who was going to grab the rod like gentlemen - then I pushed the guys aside and muscled my way to the rod and it was on. I've now caught my second ever Spanish Mackerel and even though this one is slightly smaller than the first it seemed to fight much more strongly - I have to admit I am hooked on catching these beautiful fish.

As the day progressed we were being tormented by some unstoppables slicing bait up or wrapping lines around the coral. I think Tugger was onto some giants of the deep on at least 7 occasions to be summarily bitten off. The livies were coming back looking like someone had carefully taken a jigsaw to them and carved the centre clean out. I tried to re-create the look of the fish on the lie-detector - 62cm Trevally - BAIT

We were quickly approaching the end of our pillies and the livie out the back was looking like it would last all week when the music began... zzzzzzzzzzzzsssssssssssssssssssssszzzzzzzzzzzzz and we were on again, I can only imagine that Tugger had nailed me to the floor because I can't imagine not jumping for that rod. Nathan was on and the fight began (I have video of the battle and will try to upload it later - including Tugger giving religious instruction to the Spaniard via the priest) it was an epic battle and Nathan was up to the task. We finally got the fish into the boat and it was like we have a pigeon-pair of Mackerel.

We eventually ran out of pillies and the squid was only getting a few hits. We were trying to get the hat-trick with a Mack for Tugger, but alas the final livie was also butchered by an unstoppable and we were out of bait. Over the course of the morning we had bagged out on Snapper, caught 2 Spanish Mackerel (Around 116cm each), boated a tasty Green Job Fish and used up some 8 or 9 trevally as bait.

front hook can either go in the nose or the back just behind the head and the back hook i've started using a large treble in under near the tail and use single strand wire while the mackerel are about. the wire for the back hook is joined through the eye of the front hook

Nice fish boys.... How on earth do you rig those Trevs? Do you still bridle them through the nose like slimeys?

Mark,

We had a shocker, got dusted up a few times and caught a few legals but nothing to write home about. Found a few new marks which really have some promise for the winter reefies. Good to see you guys had a day out, looks like you guys really have boat rock sussed out.

The boss has told me to start chasing some fish that we can eat, (big GT's) not to tasty, so weekend might be driving around out wider looking for some pearlie spots. Have no idea where to start but will give it a go, figure head out to the 100m line and sound around?

Once again good to catch up and good to see you guys had a really good day.

Andrew

I know there was something I needed to ask in my report - has anyone seen Nathan - he was following me out of Mark's place as he isn't familiar with the area. In the rain I thought I still had him in my rear-view mirror but as the rain stopped I found out that the car I thought was him was someone else.

I'm sure he will show up, his Mrs may miss him and go out looking so if anyone knows where he got to or if you see a black Jeep wandering aimlessly around the Wello Point, Birkdale area give him a hand will you.
